About fifteen years ago, when I was just a newly coined college degree, I was practiced at Turner Classic Movies in Atlanta. It was the dream of an avid old Hollywood fan. Even 21 years I could throw facts about Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart as any 70 years my senior. I once had a conversation with Tcm Patron Saint Robert Osborne about Myrna Loy – like most of you, should google because she was simply sublime. But it is next to the point.
One of my tasks was to help reorganize their huge library with information packages on various films, ready to draw at any time they needed research for intros/outros in the primetime range. Each manilla envelope, filled to the edge with photocopies, was carefully alphabetized. However, when I came to the “S” episode, I noticed a curious omission: “The sound of music. “I was confused. Never was broadcast on TCM.
For several years, as perhaps the Fox of the 1900s is most loved film Property, the seminal musical is only broadcast on television, usually on an annual basis on one of the large networks. In the last pair of decades, ABC has shown it every Christmas. It was eventually broadcast around Easter on free form. But in these exhibitions it has always been paired with advertising – not in their complete, widescreen, uninterrupted glory. However, after Fox was purchased by Disney, the possibility of the broadcasting range “The Sound of Music” was quickly expanding a reality. It ended up after all Disney+ And Hulu, the first time it had streamed.
Back to TCM – who showed the movie, along with a question and answer with none other than stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummerfor then 50th anniversary At the TCM Classic Film Festival 2015. I worked that party, and that was a big, big thing. The opening shot projected on the gigantic TCL -Chinese IMAX screen? Overindulge.
But it still hadn’t been sent at TCM, the ultimate home for everything classic. I mean, it’s in the abbreviation. And it was not broadcast on the channel over the years after the acidic screening.

For TCM’s annual Summer under the stars Today, Christopher Plummer is the main attraction and at 20, “The Sound of Music” will finally make its debut on the canal – about 60 years after the release and 31 years after TCM launched.
Sure, there are now a large number of ways to watch the movie – but who can resist an introduction from host Ben Mankiewicz, full of facts and his unique brand of humor? I would almost certainly bet that he will turn on Plummer’s personal contempt for the project – he once called it “The sound of mucus” – Although it was eventually heated to something more similar to affection.
“As chynical as I was always about the sound of music. I respect that there is a little relief from all the shot and car chases you see today,” Plummer told Vanity 2015. “It is quite wonderful, old -fashioned universal. It has the evil guys and the Alps; it has Julie and feeling in bucket loads. Our director, dear old Bob Wise, kept it from falling over the edge of a sea of treason. Nice man. God. God, what a gent. There are very few of them in our business.”
“The Sound of Music” will also be release again in theaters on the 13th of September 13 and 17 by Fathom events. But see it tonight, August 2, uncut and commercial free, at TCM at. 20 et.
