“The bear” Just broke an Emmy disc. But probably not in the way the creators of the series hope.
In 2024, the show took home 11 Emmys for its second season and became the winning comedy series in a single year at Television Academy Awards. On Sunday, however, the show did not make a single Emmy. In combination with its suspension at Creative Arts Emmys in early September, “The Bear” ends its season 2025 with a total of zero Emmy winnings.
This gives it the biggest drop for a comedy series in a single year in Emmy’s history – and ties it with “The Crown” for the biggest drop for all series.
Why did it once have loved the FX series such a steep case from grace? There are some reasons.
For starters, “The Bear” had extremely limited competition for this negative record. The majority of the programs that have won 10 Emmys or more are limited series or TV films (starting with “Angels in America” in 2004 and also including “John Adams”, “Chernobyl”, “Watchmen”, “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Behind the Candelabra”), which did not recover the year after and thus did not affect a waste.
“Game of Thrones” was one of the only programs that could reasonably compete with “The Bear” in this arena. In 2015, the HBO series broke the record for most victories in a single season for an ongoing program, and made 12 Emmys for Season 5. The following year, “Game of Thrones” matched this total, and submitted 12 Emmys for Season 6. After one year’s leave) returned “Game of Thrones” 2018 with a nine-EM-eme, (gave it a return, (gave it a return, it gave it a return, which gave it a return, it gave it a return, (gave it a return, (gave it a return, (gave it a return, (gave it a return, (gave it. It then hit this in total with 12 wins in 2019 for its final season.
Apart from “Game of Thrones” and “The Bear”, only three seasons of continued series TV have made double-digit victories at Emmys. In 2022, season 1 of “The White Lotus” got a 10-Emmy-Drag-fäven if this happened in the Limited Series category, where the first season was classified. The following year, season 2 was moved to the categories for drama series and won half as many Emmys, five. In 2024, “Shōgun” crushed the Emmy record with 18 wins, but the show has not yet released a second season.
It leaves “The Crown”, which received 11 Emmys from 24 nominations for its fourth season 2021. When the Netflix series returned to Emmys in 2023, it went home empty-handed with only six noms, which gave it a similar case as “the bear.” The show would return in 2024 for its last season and win three times.
When it comes to what made Emmy voters turn on “The Bear” so dramatically, it can be a combination of the fresher competition and the renewed discourse about whether the intense show is even belonging to the comedy for.
Right now, voters seem to be looking for comedy series that are first and foremost fun. It is worth noting that even during its record season, “The Bear” lost the best Emmy Prize to “Hacks”, a show about the comedy art and business that is full of often and open humor.
This year it was Apple TV +’s “The Studio” that got the most voter love for any comedy. The show won 13 Emmys Total, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The Hollywood broadcast is steadily engaged in generating laughter, with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and companies that fill each section with wall-to-wall Gags. It also has strong technical elements with long shoots and intricate sets to play both glamor and mania of show biz. No wonder it’s the new champion.
