The Oscar race has an established Frontrunner, which is often not the perfect place to be. When that happens, “sinners” (Warner Bros.) AUTEUR RYAN COOGler looked at the competition at Tellurid This Labor Day weekend, which revealed a healthy slate by Oscar challenger.
Best picture Battlers
A movie appeared that could challenge “sinners” in several categories: Oscar winner Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”) delivered heartbreaking family drama “Port” (Focus), with two power performances from Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley as William and Agnes Shakespeare. Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s best seller 2020, film traces their early romance and marriage and the birth of three children, two girls and one boy, Hammen. Their lives are rocked by grief as they lose the harbor to the plague, and Shakespeare buries themselves by writing the tragedy “Hamlet.” The directors will support Zhao’s careful period crafts and screenwriters with O’Farrell, together with the technology categories cinematography, production and costume design, points and editing. How will it do at the checkout? Critics like (Metascore: 95), but it was also a favorite of the audience. Sometimes it feels good to cry.
Yorgos Lanthimo’s latest attack on the audience, current sci-fi comedy thriller, also played well at Telluride. “Bugonia” (Focus), which will tracy (co -authors of the “menu”) adapted from 2003 2003 Korean movie. Lanthimo’s usual suspected Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are both at the top of their form. Plemons play a conspiracy nut that kidnaps a large Pharma (stone) and think she is a stranger to destroying the planet. Looking at these two actors meets is great fun – until the torture begins. This movie won’t be for everyone (Metascore: 76), but Lanthimos (the “favorite” and “bad things”) are loved by Oscar voters. Picture, director, adapted script, actor and actress (Stone can also support), and several crafts are probably opportunities – unless the movie bombs at checkout.
Netflix showed several best image challengers, including “The Shape of Water” Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro’s horror from the 19th century “Frankenstein,” In the lead role Jacob Elordi as a scary, high, but sympathetic monster and Oscar Isaac as his abusive creator. Del Toro plays with a budget of $ 120 million and it shows. The Well attended Film (Metascore: 75) can compete for image (if its horror elements are not too horrifying), director, actors and supportive actors, adapted script and several crafts including kinematography, production and costume design, editing and especially original points. The point from Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat (“The Shape of Water”, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”), one of his best, carries the film’s various tones. Netflix will give the movie some theater game to qualify, but its cash office does not matter.

He also came to Telluride from Venice was Noah Baumbach’s elegant “Jay Kelly,” A portrait of an aging Hollywood star similar to (and was written for) George Clooney, who moves like a star that assesses his life and the time that was not spent with its daughters. Adam Sandler also shines like the long -suffering boss who has sacrificed much of his life who serves his needy manager. He was able to land a supportive actor nomination, his first. The entertaining film ends on a satisfactory note. It is less of a critic’s image (Metascore: 64) but play well and should satisfy the Academy audience, which often responds to showing business stories.
Neon will operate the Norwegian Cannes Prize Winner “Sentimental Value” (Metacritic: 88) In several categories including best image, director Joachim Trier (“The Worst Person in the World”), screenwriter Trier and Eskil Vogt, actor Stellan Skarsgard (dilapidated for a nomination) and Renate Reinve and best international film film.
Other challengers
Scott Cooper’s “Springsteen: Deliver me from nowhere” (Metascore: 69) may be a commercial success for Disney’s twentieth century pictures and proves that “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White can wear a movie. Acting nominations for him and Jeremy Strong that his manager Jon Landau is on his way.
You can’t win them all. Edward Berger’s “Conclave” Follow -up “Ballad of A Little Player” (Netflix) wow not the critics (Metascore: 51) and crowds at Telluride, although Colin Farrell’s performance served raves.
To build on its good will in Cannes was Richard Linklaters Netflix Pickup “New Wave“(Metascore: 71), which is a lovely black and white tribute to Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless,” Recreate the movie 1959. The French role is flawless, as is Zoey Deutch in a Pixie cut like Jean Seberg. But what categories will it be discontinued? Cinephiles will be charmed and writers and directors will recognize Linklaters cutlets. Cinematography is a competitive category. Therefore Netflix runs the movie for Best international feature filmGiven its French producers, role and crew.

Telluride Tributee Jafar Panahi’s French -produced Palme d’Or Winner “It was just an accident” (neon) is another possibility (Metascore: 87). The word, however, is that this year the French Committee can lean on a well -reviewed local production that played Cannes, Animated Function “Arco” (Neon) -. Neon showed three possible best international feature from Cannes at Telluride, including Brazil’s likely Oscar submission, “The Secret Agent” (Metacritic: 87).
Sony Pictures Classics brought an Oscar challenger to Telluride, Linklater’s Berlin Prize winner “Blue Moon” (Metascore: 76) game Ethan Hawke As a declining songwriter Lorenz Hart. The film is an emotional high thread as a writer, directors and actors will admire. Hawke was able to land his fifth Oscar nomination and his fourth to collaborate with Linklater. However, the box-officer outlook for this outside New York City is Iffy.
A24 Sundance Post “If I had legs I would kick you” (Metacritic: 82) Built up some steam for actress Rose Byrne, who gives a fantastic performance as a mother overwhelmed by a child with special needs. And Harris Dickinson’s “Urchin” (Metascore: 77) With the lead role for some considerations of actor Frank Dillane also played well.
Some of the films playing at Telluride, such as “H is for Hawk,” who served Raves for Claire Foy, looking for distributors; Most of the available buyers have full slate.
