The Sundance Film Festival has just announced new details for its final edition in Park City.
In January 2026, the festival will offer a host of events honoring its longtime home, as well as its founder, Robert Redford. The The late actor died in September at the age of 89. He had made Park City the festival’s home, having been a resident of Utah since the late 1960s. As such, the 2026 Sundance Film Festival will screen one of his major films, “Downhill Racer,” as a tribute — it also happened to be partially shot in Boulder, Colorado, the new home of the festival starting in 2027. IndieWire is called Redford’s work in “Downhill Racer” as one of his greatest performances.
Taking place from January 22 to February 1, 2026, in Park City and Salt Lake City, Sundance will even feature a series of featured talks on Egyptian Theater on Main Street, which had previously announced it would sit outside last Park City Sundance. The Park City Legacy program will be concentrated during the period January 27-30.
Several all-time Sundance classics will be featured in the final Park City edition, including “Saw” from a 2024 restoration, a world premiere 20th anniversary restoration of “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Half Nelson” and a very recent restoration of Gregg Araki’s “Mysterious Skin,” with the filmmakers in attendance and featured. Also screening as part of Park City Legacy Films’ sidebar at Sundance 2026 is Barbara Kopple’s “American Dream” to celebrate the documentary’s 35th anniversary, Lynn Shelton’s “Humpday” as a tribute to filmmakers who have passed away, and Reginald Hudlin’s “cult party classic.” The older films will be followed by cast and crew questions.
As for Sundance’s premier slate of world premieres, the festival is still on track to screen half a dozen films a day before lineup announcements later this fall.
As for events for the Park City farewell, Sundance will also host a culminating event on January 30 in celebration of the city’s locals who have supported the festival for decades. Other events planned for the final Park City edition include Celebrating Sundance Institute: A Tribute to Founder Robert Redford as well as a Directors Brunch at Sundance Mountain Resort.
IndieWire’s Eugene Hernandez told IndieWire that this upcoming Sundance’s first artist initiative is in line with Redford’s adage that “everyone has a story.”
