“Sinners” returns to IMAX theaters for Halloween weekend

Sinner” is back just in time for the scary season. Ryan Cooglers Warner Bros. triumph grossed $367 million worldwide after its April 18 releaseand now it will add even more to its haul.

The vampire film will be re-released in IMAX theaters, including for IMAX 70mm releases, beginning Thursday, October 30 and continuing through Halloween weekend thereafter.

A genre cocktail of vampire gore and southern gothic horror — think of the real-life legend surrounding Delta Blues legend Robert Johnson, who is rumored to have sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in exchange for his guitar-playing skills, but in film form — “Sinners” is one of the most acclaimed films of the year. It has a Metacritic score of 84, and IndieWire’s David Ehrlich gave it a B+. That it also had such an extraordinary box office success means it’s exactly the kind of film the Oscars always want to celebrate: Original, celebrated and popular.

So it’s no surprise that the Oct. 30 IMAX re-release is also perfectly positioned to give the film another push in the Oscar race: “One Battle After Another” will have been out for over a month at that point, some of the fall’s festival favorites have already opened to the public, and now… here’s a movie that opened six months ago that might be as good, or better, than any of them. It’s just the right time to remind people how much they enjoyed this movie about identical twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) trying to open a juke joint in 1930s Mississippi that suddenly find themselves at the center of a vampire takeover.

For what it’s worth, says Marcus Jones, editor of the IndieWire Awards “Sinners” in the category Frontrunner for the best picture race this Oscar seasonalong with other titles like Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet,” Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,” Mona Fastvold’s “The Testament of Ann Lee” and, of course, Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.”

The IMAX 70MM locations where audiences can see “Sinners” during this re-release are AMC Lincoln Square in New York City, NY; Universal AMC Citywalk in Los Angeles, CA; Irvine Spectrum and IMAX in Irvine, CA; AMC Metreon in San Francisco, CA; Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, IN; Harkins Arizona Mills in Tempe, AZ; Autonation IMAX in Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Cinemark Dallas IMAX in Dallas, TX; Cineplex Cinemas Vaughn in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and BFI IMAX in London, UK.
