Composer Rob Simonsen (“Deadpool & Wolverine” do for Pixars “Elio.” He was also inspired to experiment on spacious musical ways to improve The coming story of loneliness and the search for belonging in space.

The composer, who worked with director Adrian Molina and later Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi (“Turning Red”) when they succeeded him, said it was a smooth transition. The female director gave greater motivation for Elio (Yonas Kibeab) to want to be abducted by foreigners and reinforced his emotional bow.
“I believe in many ways the expanded world, but they held on to the heart I felt was there in the beginning and carried it in a really beautiful way,” Simonsen said, and I wrote a “Elio” theme after I first saw the movie when I was employed and that stopped through, which was really nice. What inspired the theme was a big seventh, which offered an ambition stop that reflected Elio when he was enough for the stars. “It was something I continued to play with in the beginning,” Simonsen added. “The big seventh just felt right and then figure out how to support it with the chords under. I am forced against simple pianoelodies with a large synth-driven expansiveness around it. And it worked. Now it opens the movie and we hear the theme as the theme Disney Logo is playing. “
However, the theme is held back until we see a tear on Elio’s face during the early scene in Planetarium, where he looks at the Golden Record Voyager that leaves the earth in the observatory. “They have fantastic instincts, the smart Pixar animators,” Simonsen continued. “They are very deep studies of human emotions, so they know exactly the frame to release a theme and get the music to turn.”
The composer then designed a signal sound with a note that reaches into space with Golden Record Voyager. “The sound plays on a synth that I created, and it echoes and exceeds into space, and then becomes a more fully realized musical motif when the signal from the universe comes back,” Simonsen said. “It’s a similar synth sound but with more notes to it. The idea of this conversation and answers from a signal is something we played with throughout the movie.
But of course Simonsen saved the largest musical bombing for Elio’s Adventure on the Communicated: The Heavenly Intergalactic Space Station, where he is greeted by friendly, imaginative foreigners who believe he is the leader of the earth. “The signal sound turns into this large theme with full chord support, with full orchestra support,” he added. “Everything is exhausted, reinforced with many different synthesis and structures that pop and float around.
But instead of using a human choir, Simonsen switched to Robot Choir Dolls from teenage technology, based in Sweden. “They have built these speakers in these wooden bodies,” he said. “These little cord dolls have this very unique sound that I have never heard. They sound human, but clearly not human.
“I think it does a good job of giving us this other worldly structure,” Simonson added. “But they have a limited functionality built in them. One of my assistants, Tiger Lily, a coding genius, could hack the dolls with Python. And we created a custom functionality, so we could use them in a more robust way.
