Film festival participants (and now price offenders) have been able to enjoy a double dose of Richard Linklater 2025, as the Austin-based filmmaker has released two very different films about artists and entertainment figures from the 20th century. IN “Blue Moon,” Ethan Hawke plays the Lorenz Hart of the 1900s Lorenz Hart – who collaborated with Richard Rodgers before being shot aside in favor of Oscar Hammerstein II – in a Somber chamber about a bitter artist who looked at an old friend succeeds without him. At the other end of the spectrum is ”New wave“Who sees Linklater applying their distinct skill to make windy hangout movies on the French New Wave.
The film, which is completely handled in Paris with a French crew, is a love letter to Jean-Luc Godard and the French New Wave cinema, and chronicles the chaotic process of shooting “Breathless” in 1959. Guillaume Marbeck plays Godard. Lots of other familiar faces from the French cinema’s era also make performances, with many critics similar to the film with Linklater’s version of “Midnight in Paris.
“About the best way to criticize a movie, as Cahiers du Cinéma -critic Godard once said, is to make one, then director Richard Linklater can reply to make a tribute to” breath “instead be to not criticize but certainly to undermine the tropics of movies about Moviemaking,” IndieWires Ryan Lattanzio wrote In his Cannes review. “His black and white” Nouveelle Vaga “, in itself a thorough recreation of a movie made in 1959 with all celluloid, academia ratio Crackle and Pop, is a more new wave hangout movie than film history, with the parade of faces and names inspiring to know Chuckles in the Cinephile audience.”
After his Cannes debut, “Nouvelle Vague” made his American premiere at 2025 Telluride Film Festival, Where Deutsch spoke with indieview About what she saw as parallels between link clays and Godard.
“They are two artists who have maintained their artistic integrity as filmmakers who do what they want to do and make films they want to do, not what others want to see,” Deutsch said. “It’s a rare quality. Even the biggest filmmakers of all time, most of them, waver at one point or another, and it’s ok.
