Predictions about best production design for the Academy Awards

Production designer Suzie Davies (“Saltburn”) and set decorator Cynthia Sleiter carefully recreated the Vatican interior at Cinecittà Studios, especially the secreled Conclave in the Sistine Chapel. This was a combination of light and dark, traditional and modern, male and female. For example, there is a hermetically sealed, posh prison method for the fictional Casa Santa Marta Vatican apartments, where the Cardinals live and a little more freedom in the Sixtin chapel. Fortunately, Cinecittà had an existing set for the latter in storage.

Oscar-winning “Dune” production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Shane Vieau (an Oscar winner for “The Shape of Water”) takes a deeper dive into Fremen and the Harkonnen cultures, with 40 percent more sets to work with. The mysterious, hidden world of the nomadic fried is slowly buried. This is the metaphor for the inner sietch set, which is filled with sand. A bone magoni inspired the cave of birds, whose interior looks like giant fingerprints. The manufacturer’s temple is a figure eight, symbolizes eternity, where sand represents death and water life. Robert Eggers “Nosferatu” offers a more folkloric tack on the vampire film with pre-Victorian Gothic horror. Shots throughout Prague (including Barrandov Studios, the 1400s Rožmitál Castle and Invalidovna complex), production designer Craig Lathrop and put the decorator Beatrice Brentnerová leaning into architectural authenticity as a way to sham the horror. They recreate a German city from the 19th century and contrast it with a 16th century castle in Romania, where Bill Skarsgårds Count Orlok lives.
