Paul Reubens became an icon thanks to his comic character PEE-Wee Herman, but who was the man really behind Cringe Comedy Laughs? Two -part documentary ”PEE-Wee as herself“Dives into Reuben’s inheritance and Controversial celebrity statusWith AUTEurs like Tim Burton, Judd Apatow and Benny and Josh Safdie most immortal both PEE-Wee and Reubens himself.
Directed by Matt Wolf, the documentary premiered at Sundance. The feature is invoiced as the “definitive portrait” of Reubens offering a “window in his never -discussed personal life.” The film was made from over 40 hours of interview movies filmed before Reubens’ Died 2023 at the age of 70And includes clips from more than 1,000 hours of archive films, as well as tens of thousands have never seen photographs from Reuben’s personal collections.

Tim Burton, Judd Apatow, Natasha Lyonne, Cassandra Peterson, Laurence Fishburne, Debi Mazar, David Arquette, Lynne Stewart, John Moody, Alison Mork, S. Epatha Merkerson, Gary Panter, Wayne White and Laraine Newman are among the interviewed for the movie. Reuben’s sister Abby Rubenfeld is also displayed.
“PEE-Wee as himself” chronicles Reuben’s life in the Circus city of Sarasota, Florida to its avant-garde theater training at the California Institute of the Arts. Later he was in Groundling’s Improv group, where he created PEE-Wee Herman and later led Hitfilm “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” Reubens had subversive Emmy-winning children’s TV series “PEE-Wee’s Playhouse”, and despite his fame chose to never be photographed or publicly interviewed by character.
“PEE-Wee As himself” is executive produced by Benny and Josh Safdie, along with Late Reubens, Emma Tiller Koskoff, Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, Candace Tomark and Kyle Martin. Nancy Abraham, Lisa Hales and Sara Rodriguez’s execution of HBO. Director Wolf also produced. The function is an Elara & First Love Films production.
