A Palestinian activist whose images that documented life during the Israeli occupation participated in the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land” was shot and killed on Monday during a confrontation with Israeli settlers, New York Times reported.
Video films shot by 31-year-old Awdah Hathaleen, a journalist from the small village of Umm Al-Khair on the southern West Bank, helped shape “No Other Lan”, a 2024 documentary as Won the best documentary feature at the Academy Awards Earlier this year. The film was collaborated by Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham.
Hathaleen was fatally injured near his home during the collision with settlers and was pronounced dead at an Israeli hospital, his family told the Times. The Israeli police arrested Yinon Levi, a settlers who owns an unauthorized outpost near Hebron, on suspicion of reckless behavior that resulted in death and illegal use of a firearm.
Levi’s lawyer had argued that his client fired his weapon in self -defense after being confronted by Palestinians who threw stones, and a judge released him Tuesday to arrest. The Times reported that it had verified a video where Levi is seen as waving a gun when he struggles with a Palestinian; Stones fly over their heads before Levi cocks his gun and fires.
The Biden administration introduced sanctions against Levi earlier this year, with reference to repeated acts of violence and threats to Palestinians. Levi, who runs an Earthworks company, has reportedly worked with the Israeli military to bulldoze Palestinian structures.
“I can hardly believe that,“ adra wrote in his X -account. “My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered tonight. He stood in front of the community center in his village when a settlers fired a bullet that penetrated his chest and took his life. This is how Israel erases us – one life at a time.”
About 2.7 million Palestinians live on the West Bank, together with approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers. Although both populations live under Israeli control, settlers are generally the subject of civil law, while the Palestinians remain under military rule.
