Who would have thought that “bad lieutenant” would be a quasi-franchise? We do not guess Abel Ferrara, but after Werner Herzog made his own version“franchise” continues with another unlikely author that takes on themes for the original neo-noir film: Japanese champion Takashi Miike.
Miike next movie is “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo”, and shortly after the film was reported as a hot package because they met Kanes market, Neon On Wednesday evening, announced that it boarded the film with plans to both release it theatrical in North America and represent the sales rights at Cannes internationally.
“Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo” will start Shun Oguri (“Godzilla v. Kong”) and Lily James (“Pam and Tommy”), and WWE star Liv Morgan joins the role. The film follows the bad lieutenant (Oguri), a corrupt player in the Metropolitan Police Force, who is thrown into a tangled case after an enigmatic FBI agent (James) arrives at Tokyo to investigate the disappearance of a politician (Morgan). At the same time, a different murderer seems in the Yakuza underworking to shadow their move.
Filming on the project is expected to begin this month.
Daisuke Tengan, who worked with Miike on “audition”, “imprint” and “13 murderers” will now cooperate for the fourth time; Tengan wrote the script based on IP, first produced by Edward R. Pressman. The idea is to preserve DNA in the original film while transporting the story to the streets of Tokyo.
“A team of incredibly talented actors and crew has gathered in Tokyo. Now. I am throwing a quick ball straight down the middle of your strike zone – no tricks, no gimmicks,” Miike said in a statement. “I am convinced that we are breaking through every limit to create unforgettable entertainment. Get ready for the trip with us !!”
The film will be a co-production in the US JAPA, produced by Jeremy Thomas for recorded image companies, Sam Pressman for Pressman Film, Naoaki Kitajima for Nippon TV and Misako Saka for OLM. Executive producers include Tom Quinn, Yuzo Kuwahara, Tetsu Fujimura, Paula Paises, Alainée Kent, Peter Watson, Ivan Kelava, Max Loeb and Mike Apgar. The deal was negotiated by Neon’s Sarah Colvin, VP for acquisitions, and Paula Paises from Pressman Film, and recorded the image company Ivan Kelava on behalf of the filmmakers.
“We are all happy to interpret about this iconic IP with a master’s filmmaker like Takashi Miike,” said producer Jeremy Thomas from recorded image companies. “We have produced ten films in Japan, most recently” Grand Maison Paris “which has collected over $ 28 million domestically, and it is a fertile place to create and distribute films. I feel the time is right for this irreverent hybrid.”
“Regissören Miike tar med sig en orädd ny vision till den dåliga löjtnanten, en karaktär som definieras av auteur. Precis som Maestros Ferrara och Herzog levererade filmer som radikalt annorlunda som sina egna röster, Miike’s Adaptation är oöverträffande vild och unik,” sade Sam Pressman, VD för Pressman -film, “My Father Edward R. Pressman, alltid tro på Corruh, både Corrupation, Corupation, has a global Resice, has a global relay. To realize this next development now in Tokyo with director Miike, Neon and my father’s lifelong friend Jeremy Thomas – all true believers in the power of independent film – is both an honor and a dream. “”
Miike also produces a new adaptation of His classic horror movie “audition” for focus featuresWhich has Charli XCX in conversation with starting in the project.
Neon also has a number of films it is Presents at CannesIncluding Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value”, Julia Ducouranus “Alpha”, Raoul Peck’s “Orwell” and Michael Angelo Covinos “Splitsville.”
Miike is represented by Caa and Atlas artists. Oguri is represented by Tristone Entertainment Inc. James represented by Tavistock Wood Management, Independent Talent Group and UTA.
