Belgium’s submission for 2025 Oscars mixes the sports intensity of “challengers” with the emotional importance of “she said.”
The haunting title ”Julie keeps quiet“Who is the screenwriter Leonardo van Dijl’s director’s debut, was Shooting on film Like colleague tennis drama “Challengers”, but the comparisons end there. Tessa van Den Broeck plays as a top player at an academy that keeps quiet when her older male coach is suspended in the middle of an investigation.
The official synopsis reads: “As the star player at an elite Youth Tennis Academy, Julie’s life revolves around the game she loves. She trains hard, just pauses for class or physical therapy before returning to the gym fixed to make it to the Belgian Tennis Association. When her coach Jérémy is suddenly interrupted after the suicide by one of his female protés, all players at the academy are encouraged to talk about his experiences with him. Julie, however, decides to be silenced. Despite strong suspicions from those around her that Julie’s relationship with Jérémy was at best inappropriate, her persistent silence begins to speak volumes. Confused and full of anxiety, the pressure she once channeled against training shifts inward and influenced her confidence, her focus and her play. ”
Ruth Becquart, Ken de Bouw, Claire Bodson and Laurent Caron also play.
Real tennis champion Naomi Osaka Executive produces the function, which debuted at Cannes Critics Week 2024. The film Where acquired of film movement at the festival.
“Julie Keeps Silent” is co -written by director van Dijl and actress Becquart. Kinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis shot the function in 35mm/65mm.
