At night two of the 46th News & Documentary Emmy Awards Thursday evening took MSNBC home the night’s biggest award, best documentary, for “The Sing Sing Chronicles.”
But at the ceremony focused on documentary programming, National Geographic led all winners with the six award and took home outstanding historical documentary and outstanding nature documentary among others. Netflix followed, with two programming gains (outstanding business and economic documentary and outstanding investigative documentary) and two craft gains (outstanding film – documentary and outstanding light direction – documentary).
PBS historically does well on the second night of the annual ceremony, often leads the packaging in documentary programming with series such as “Frontline”, “POV” and “Independent Lens.” Tonight’s two documentary programming gains led the network’s two total to 19 in the decade. They also saw three inductors of gold/silver circle – this in the middle President Donald Trumps urges to reduce network’s financing.
Jon otherwise Night’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Documentary, presented by ITVS President and CEO Carrie Lozano. Otherwise, a four times Emmy is nominated for his work as a documentary director, writer and film photographer on projects such as “Yosemite: The Fate of Heaven” and “America’s Endangered Species: Don’t say adopy”. Otherwise, Alex Gibney, which was recognized with Lifetime Achievement Award 2024, follows Barbara Kumple, who was recognized in 2023. “Today” Journalist Al Roker received a life award for news during the ceremony First night.
This year’s Gold Circle Documentary Inducements were filmmakers Michael Kirk (PBS Frontline and Kirk Documentary Group), Gordon Quinn (Kartemquin Films) and Marcia Smith (Firelight Media). Night’s documentary silver circle inductes included was producer/author/director Gemma Cubero del Barrio (PBS) and editor Aljernon Tunsil (PBS and Firelight Films).
