“The Chronology of Water” is Stewart’s adaptation of a memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch, a competitive swimmer who handled an abusive childhood, sexual experiment, toxic relationships and abuse, all before she found her voice as a creative writer. Anchored by a powerful honest performance of Imogen PootsThe film is framed much as a visual poem, absent identifying time stamps or title cards and is told in “a constellation of scattered quotes and semi -enclosed memories,” as Indiege’s critic David Ehrlich described it from Cannes. He praised the film and especially Stewart’s direction to be inherent comfortable and talented behind the camera and wrote that “Some films are shot. This one was Targeted. ”

Stewart had developed “The Chronology of Water” for eight years before it finally found funding from Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Production Banner, and Stewart announced that she would direct it far back in 2022 before it was finally ready for Cannes this summer.
