Kathryn Bigelow takes back the action to Netflix. The acclaimed director means that she returns to filmmaking with thriller “House of Dynamite” about the White House’s response to a domestic missile attack.
The project was announced 2024 with one Puck Report confirming that “Jackie” and “Zero Day” printer Noah Oppenheim wrote the original script. The film will be set in real time and share a sensitivity to Bigelow’s previous films “Zero Dark Thirty”, “Detroit” and “The Hurt Locker.”

“House of Dynamite” will premiere in selected theaters in October and on Netflix on October 24. This is a milestone for both Bigelow and Netflix: in the middle of Push from filmmakers such as Rian Johnson and Greta Gerwig have theater release for features, is Netflix to put Bigelow on Big Screen.
“House of Dynamite” is Bigelow’s first movie since 2017’s “Detroit.” She previously developed an adaptation of David Koepp’s novel “Aurora” for Netflix, but the film was scrapped in 2022.
Nieves told IndieWire That none of the role of “House of Dynamite” even knew the film’s title during production. “It’s wild, because I don’t even know the name of the movie, and I don’t know when it comes out,” Nieves said. “All I can say is that it is completely different from what you have ever seen – which is not much – but still completely different and it was a very challenging role when it comes to the time I spent on it and what it asked of us all.”
Bigelow was the first woman to win an Oscar for best director in 2009 with “The Hurt Locker.” Bigelow told indifire 2017 at the same time as “Detroit” markets that all her films have “meaningful messages”, especially about the government.
“At the end of the day, entertainment needs a piece of messages to it. It’s a real motivator,” she said. “The genre element is captivating and attractive, both as a viewer and filmmaker, but using it as a vehicle to move a conversation forward or at least shine a light on a conversation is extremely exciting. (‘Detroit’ was) challenging material, but so ‘zero dark thirty’ and ‘damaged cabinets.’ When you work in this space where entertainment alone is not enough, you use it as a delivery method for meaningful messages, so you work in a more journalistic situation that if it is a good story and there is a significant personal commitment from the filmmaker, it will find a way to reach an audience. ”
The iconic “Point Break” director added, “I am always encouraged by the commitment and devotion by a filmmaker who lives in his material. Usually it translates the belief into the screen and therefore the audience. It is what concerns me – truth and integrity … there is an integrity with regard to the choice of material from the filmmaker and how he or she does not see the story.
