For 11 years, Homura Kawamoto’s manga “Kakegurui” has pleased the readers with his Hammy, funny ridiculous story about an elite private school where student popularity is determined through an underground gaming circle. By combining intensely serious gaming fights with a strong dose of lesbian homoerotics, “Kakegurui” (which translates into “compulsive player” in English) has created a whole franchise since its first publication in 2014, including two seasons of a Anime Series produced by Studio Mappa, a Japanese series Live-Action, two spin-off manga and two live-action films.
Now, Netflix – As a licensed anime series for international distribution – the game takes to see if this strange, camping property can make the same successful adaptation leap as Manga likes “One Piece” have in the past, rather than flop in the face as some other attempts to translate anime into new media (see “Cowboy Bebop”). Streamer has today announced that an English live adaptation of “Kakegurui”, entitled “Bet“Will premiere May 15.
Developed for television by Simon Barry, best known as the Creator behind the Netflix Action Fantasy series “Warrior Nun”, “Bet” chops relatively close to the basic premise of the original manganese. Miku Martineau plays in the series as Yumeko, a transfer student for an elite global boarding school and a compulsive gaming addict with a mysterious past. At the academy, students are investing huge sums of money and even their freedom for a chance to rise the strict social hierarchy, where the richest rule as gods, while those with the highest debts are moved to wait Yumeko’s dependence and her playing skills cause ripples in the school immediately and put her in the cross chairs for the members of the powerful student council.
In addition to Martineau, the role includes the role of Ayo Solane, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O’driscoll, Aviva Mongillo and Ryan Sutherland. Apart from developing the show and executive producing, Barry will direct the series. Other executive producers include Jeff F King, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Jon Rutherford and Nick Nantell.
All 10 30-minute episodes of “bet” will be released on May 15. In addition to announcing the premiere date, Netflix released a trailer for the series. Look at it below.
