An enigmatic aura was an important ingredient to what made Don Draper One of the most compelling TV characters of all timeBut this may not have been possible had ”Mad Men“Creator Matthew Weiner did not fight to throw a relatively unknown device. Speak in A new interview with Hollywood Reporter for his “Awards Chatter” podcastCurrent “Your friends and neighbors” star Jon Hamm Reminded the casting process for the show and the lengths that managers went through to prove that he had what was required to be a leading man. In the end, Hamm shared that it came to Weiner who communicated the need to embrace the anonymity of the actor as a function, not a deficiency.
“The whole point of this show is that no one knows who this guy is,” Hamm said about what Weiner told managers. “You can’t put – for one of the better examples – robbing Lowe into this show. It would be strange. You would go,” Oh, that’s the Rob Lowe show. Like, okay, cool. “So it actually worked to my advantage rather than against me.”
That being said, to convince the network to put Hamm as No. 1 on the call parish still showed quite the trial. He ended up auditioning “six or seven” times before flew out to New York for a final meeting with the managers at AMC.
“I think there were some high -level discussions,” will we really make this child know that no one knows the management of our show? This is the first show in our network that has ever existed, “Hamm said of AMC’s concern.” The conventional wisdom was that you employ someone who has credit or a thing. “
Thankfully, during the New York meeting, Hamm was officially offered. In addition to the fact that no one really knew who he was, Hamm also used personal experience and history to build his understanding of the role. In particular, he reminded himself of his father, who would have been a contemporary of Don and shared many similar qualities.
“It was a dormant type of melancholy that I think my dad had as well as Don had, which is a bit like, you have all this,” he told Thr. “You have all this privilege. You have all this asset. Everything, it seems, goes your way. So why are you not happier? And I think it’s part of what ran the show too.”
Hamm can currently be seen on the Apple TV+ series “Your Friends and Neighbors”, along with Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn.
“Your friends and neighbors” flow on Apple TV+ with new episodes that lose Fridays.
