“A real pain,” Author/director/actor Jesse Eisenberg Is not just a campaign for an Oscar: Eisenberg also depends on the theater publishing of his documentary, “Secret apartment. “
Eisenberg Executive produces the festival favorite function, which is directed by Jeremy Workman (“Lily overturns the world”). This is Eisenberg’s second collaboration with Workman after producing Workman’s documentary 2018 “The world before your feet.”
“Secret Mall Apartment” tells the story of eight Rhode Island artists who created a secret apartment in the lively Providence Place Mall 2003. The group lived there for four years and filmed (almost) everything along the way.
When the official synopsis teases, the secret apartment became a “personal expression of resistance to local gentrification, a cross-border work on public/private art, a clubhouse where large-scale charity project was planned, and finally a 750 Square-foot ‘F you to the man.”
In other words, it was about more than just squatting.
“Secret Mall Apartment” återförenar de åtta deltagarna i det sociala/detaljhandelsexperimentet – Tape Art Movements grundare Michael Townsend, Adriana Valdez Young, Colin Bliss, James Ja Mercer, Andrew Oesch, Greta Scheing, Jay Zehngebot och Emily Ustach – för den första tid på 17 years.
“The story of” Secret Mall Apartment “immediately became an obsession to me,” said Director Workman in a press release. “Where I would have wondered if they were just silly Pranksters, I quickly learned that they created the secret apartment to comment on gentrification. They had lost their homes as a result of development, and this was their unique personal way of showing developers that they would not go anywhere. Where I had wondered if they were just provocateurs, I quickly learned that they all lived a life with deep artistic commitment and integrity. At the same time as they built up the secret apartment, they spent their leisure time making artistic charity – volunteer at local children’s hospitals, teaching art at schools or creating massive memory arts for victims of 9/11 and Oklahoma City bombing. ”
Workman continued, “Making ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ was a completely happy and meaningful experience. I feel privileged to share this incredible story and bring it to a new audience. Hopefully the story can reason further. We will all continue to live in the shadows of these Larger economic systems. Companies come and do about our neighborhoods, and we are forced to adapt to their shades. We are all under the thumb in an increasingly commodified lifesty A reminder to explain your presence and individuality in the most unlikely and unique ways. It is also a heck of an incredible story.
The film Premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and continued with Screen at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, Hamptons International Film FestivalDoc NYC, and the closing night film at the Newport Film Outdoor Festival. The function has Won Nine Grand Jury Awards or Audience Awards during his festival driving.
“Secret Mall Apartment” is executive produced by Eisenberg, Allen Altman, Cathie Altman, Matthew Spain, Ivan Williams, Peter Haberman, Lance Hoffman, Marnie Black, Scott Black, Amy Zelnick and Brad Zelnick. The film is an incorrect production and Wildbrush Media production. The distributor is Mtuckman Media.
Eisenberg told us earlier Amount The “secret shopping center” is an ode to the “purity” to make art for the sake of art.
“Like someone in the art, I just thought that what they do is so clean and so perfect,” Eisenberg said about the story. “It’s art for art’s sake. I looked at it from that perspective. My favorite thing to do in my life is that I write gigs, I finish my game and we read a little and it is my favorite day of the year. And unfortunately, it gets commodified. And we have to sell tickets, and that will be this product. And so when I watch this movie I am just taken away as an artist, the purity of their art and that kind of imagination. ”
“Secret Mall Apartment” first opens on March 21 at Providence Place Mall, where the story takes place. The film will premiere on March 28 at IFC Center, April 2 at Drafthouse LA, and will also have a national roll. Check out the trailer below.
