James L. Brooks is finally back director, exactly 15 years after his last film.

Told Brooks Hollywood Reporter That he wanted “Ella McCay” to capture the tension in politics in the early 2000s. “The film was set in 2008, before we had this huge division,” he said. “There is a reason for it, and that is because it is not about it. The picture is about how you do not do government service and political office to something that any healthy person would escape from. In a movie like this, you have to find out what the hero is, and chase it. What is it really that makes you a nice person? Is it a character that is worthy of a whole.” What is it. ”
Brooks added that he threw Mackey as the lead after seeing her “brilliant” performance in the series “Sex Education”.
“I was in an audition process for a long time. I went to London and very late in the game she showed up, and that was it,” Brooks said. “In my mind, I imagined the kind of heroines we had in the 50s and 60s, early Katharine Hepburn and Rosalind Russell. There is a certain type of good movie star we used to have, and Emma has many of the same qualities.”
He continued that Mackey’s co -star Curtis has a “contagious” spirit and founded the ensemble. “She gives a humanity, moment to moment. When an image can get snoring, Jamie is just a wall against it,” he said. “It also helps she has the best hug in town.”
