It’s been over two years ago James Gunn and Peter Safran mapped its first slate of projects for DC Studios And what would be the recently renewed DCU, a new interconnected universe of superhero films and movies based on DC characters and kicks seriously with Gunn’s “Superman” coming this summer.
So where are they standing? In a press event last week at Warner Bros. Lot in Burbank, gave Gunn and Safran court with journalists about everything they had cooking, things that are moving forward and the things that have dropped the wind in their sails or have met a snag. It included everything from details about the studio Batman films – both DCU film “The Brave and the Bold” and updates on non-cannon “The Batman 2” from Matt Reeves-and a potential “Teen Titans” movie and the update of “Sgt. Rock” now that Daniel Craig has lost.
Two years ago Gunn and Safran announced 10 different projectsOf which some are in production or planned to start soon, while others have stopped. But as they said occasionally in the latest session, the key for DC is not to have green light anything until they feel that a script is locked and safe, a significant difference from how things have been done and is still done on Marvel.
“Superman” meets theaters on July 11, but after that things look good, with the plan to release two live-action features and an animated film and two live-action series and an animated series per year.
On the immediate horizon is “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, which is directed by Craig Gillespie and stars Milly Alcock as supergirl, halfway through production in London. “Lanterns”, The Green Lantern Series for HBO with Kyle Chandler like Hal Jordan, just began production in Los Angeles. Gunn’s “Peacemaker” series will debut its second season in August. And the most promising update was for “Clayface”, a body horror film based on a Batman villain that has a script by Mike Flanagan and is directed by James Watkins (“Speak no evil”). That project was not initially on DC’s initial slate of 10, but Gunn and Safran said that the script was strong enough to lock it in. The hope is to shoot the movie this summer to be released in the fall of 2026.
On the animation front, the studio is in pre-production on a family movie, “Dynamic Duo”, which would follow both Robins-Dick Grayson and Jason Todd-who fought with Batman. And the studio develops an animated series about “Blue Beetle” It would continue the events in 2023 Live Action Movies. Greenlit is also younger skewed animated series “My adventures with green lantern”, “Starfire” and “DC Super Powers.”
When it comes to Batman, the studio is in active development on “The Brave and the Bold”, which would introduce a new Batman to DCU, but no matter is attached and a script is not locked. “The Batman 2”, which would make Robert Pattinson repeat his role as Bruce Wayne and is not part of DCU -Canon, also has a completed script and was Recently pushed back for release 2027. Finally, whether the “penguin” returns for a second season is still unclear and is due to the return of Colin Farrell, among other factors.
Gunn and Safran had fewer updates to share on three other titles that were all announced among the first slate of 10, they were “Suicide Squad” Spinoff series “Waller” with Viola Davis, a “Booster Gold” series and a movie based on The the the the the one the the the the the one the the the the the the the one the the the the the the one the the the the the the the one the the the the the the one the the the the the the one the the the the the the one the the the the one the the the the the the one The The The The Film, the Heroes of the ’90s’ The Authority. ” “Waller” has been on an “uneven road”, “Booster Gold” demanded that they turn away from a previously enthusiastic showrunner, and the “authority” has so far not been a “priority”, as Gunn said. And “Swamp Thing” from James Mangold Have been to Backburner in the middle of Mangold’s award campaign for “A Completely Unknown.”
Gunn and Safran also dealt with some of the rumored projects that had never officially been announced. “Sgt. Rock ”had been in the news When it was reported that Daniel Craig was no longer in conversation with starting in the movie, but Execs said he was never attached and that they never met him. Ana Nogueira, who wrote “Supergirl: World of Tomorrow”, also works with a script for a “Teen Titans” movie. And Matthew Orton (“Moon Knight”) works with a script that can be in a story after a story after the characters Deathstroke and Bane, although Gunn and Safran did not officially confirm the project.
The good news is that Gunn still has LongView in sight and says he has mapped a six -year plan that would culminate in an “Avengers” -style film.
