One of ours Favorite movies from Sundance 2025 was a silent and introspective two -hander from the director IRA SACHS It plays more like a documentary than a biopik and even watches in a fast 75 minutes. It’s “Peter Hujars Day”, and Janus Films has released the first trailer for film Before its theater publishing in November.
Sach’s movie stars Ben Whishaw As photographer Peter Hujar and Rebecca Hall Like journalist Linda Rosenkrantz, and although the film appears entirely in Rosenkrantz’s apartment and is just a long conversation between two friends, the movie transports viewers back to New York City 1974 with this intimate and deeply personal peel back on the curtain on the art scene during the day.
Our critic Ryan Lattanzio admired the film’s minimalismIts crafts and its actors, all while recognizing that it is one of Sach’s quietest and least commercial offers. “The film is a lollande, rumor afternoon bathed in sunlight and complaining reflection when Peter Live is reminiscent of interactions with names that will be familiar to you, such as Susan Sontag, and other intellectuals and creators of the period. There is a discursive embossed to order Chinese food that takes a strange power,” he wrote. ”
What makes “Peter Hujar’s Day” unique is that the film’s dialogue is completely designed, Word for Word, from a printout of a real conversation between Hujar and Rosenkrantz as part of a never -completed book. In it, Hujar tells 24 hours in his life and gives up interactions and meetings with other NYC fixtures such as Allen Ginsberg, Susan Sontag and William S. Burroughs. The transcript itself was discovered only in 2024, 50 years after Hujar and Rosenkrantz sat together.
As he talked to IndieWire from Sundance discussed Sachs Challenges with making a literal conversation to cinemaEspecially how to make the dialogue “exciting, emotional, not boring.”
“I joined the time but also to the structure of intimacy between these two friends, who seemed dramatically unexpected and very intimate,” Sachs told IndieWire in January. “A connection that feels genuine between two people is what I am looking for in every scene that I shoot. This is a step forward because the language is so genuine, you feel that you are already there. So then the assumption was actually very difficult.”
After premiere at Sundance, the film was scooped up by Janus Films and then played the Berlin International Film Festival and will soon be part of Main Slate at the New York Film FestivalWhere the movie should be home. It opens in theaters November 7.
