We are still quite early in the race 2025 moviesand there is always room for surprises. But I have to admit that when it comes down to it upcoming Blumhouse movie Drop, I’ve been harboring some excitement for this one since the back half of last year. With the trailer for Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon’s latest now on the internet, I have to talk about how this new thriller is quickly becoming a must-see film on my dance card.
Why Drop is a must in 2025 in my eyes
As you can see from the lightning-fast and Sabrina Carpenter-enhanced trailer, Drop will be played in a unique but proven genre. Unfortunately, this real-time thriller comes at the expense of Violet (Meghann Fahy), a widow who settles back into the dating world. What was supposed to be a night out with Henry (Brandon Sklenar) turns into a game of cat and mouse, as an unseen threat brings Drop’s heroine a choice: kill her date or lose her family.
Watching this trailer at New York Comic Con 2024, and then again during my recent screening of Wolf Manhave been putting in how much I can’t wait to see this movie. Just the concept has given me flashbacks to personal favorites like Johnny Depp/Christopher Walken Film Nick of Time, as well as the Fox series 24.
As such lively influences have Drop I’m already promising an intense white knuckle thrill experience, and I’m pretty much rooting for this movie. And if that trailer wasn’t enough inspiration, you should see what director Christopher Landon had to say about why he actually took the gig.
Christopher Landon’s excitement for the drop is infectious
Mr. Landon himself got me even more hyped about this new project during the Blumfest 2024 press line, back at NYCC. After debuting the film to a room filled with Blumhouse devotees, the helmsman behind one of the potentially best horror movies of all time took a moment to chat with a bunch of us on the event’s press line.
Just the mention of Nick of Time made his face light up, as he and Meghann Fahy were on hand for some early chats about their thrill-filled ride. So when I asked Christopher Landon what drew him to it Drop’s script, written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach, what he shared with CinemaBlend sold me even more:
It’s like two boxes that I really want to check. It was a big hook, you know what I mean? Like a really good clean premise, which I really like right away of course, and it’s also very character driven. I was really invested in the idea of Megan’s character and what she had to go through during this night. … When I sat down (to) read the script, it was one of those, like I flew through it. It was such a page-turner, and I felt like, “This is going to translate.” This is going to be really fun (for) me.’
I don’t think we get enough real-time thrillers, and even if I did, I wouldn’t shy away Drop. This upcoming horror movie feels like a breath of fresh air, mostly because the horror isn’t something mysterious or omnipresent. Violet’s plight appears to be a more grounded image for both Christopher Landon and Blumhouse Productions; although the tension is on par with a would-be blockbuster.
Then again, if you boil down the trailer you watched above to a movie where time is the enemy and death is at stake, this is also a homecoming of sorts for everyone involved. Seriously, the only way I think I’d be happier with Blumhouse and Landon at this point is if there was another sick Happy Death Day 3 update put that project into production.
However, I am happy to climb to experience Drop in the near future, as this is right up there with Faith: Ares and 28 years later as a project that I am ready to fall for. We’ll have to be patient though, as they’ll debut on April 11, only in theaters. Meanwhile Blumhouse fans who may have missed the remake of Speak no evil can flow the dark joy through access to a Peacock subscription.
