Elegance Bratton’s documentary ”Move the ya body“That traces both the artistic development of house music and its historical and socio -political impact, came out of the different of sources: Hillary Clinton.
Bratton and “Move Ya Body” producers Roger Ross Williams and Chester Algernal Gordon visited the IndieWire -Studio at Sundancepresented by Dropbox, to discuss the origin of film. Williams was contacted by the former Secretary of State, a native in Chicago with a deep passion for the city’s distinct brand of cheerfully repetitive dance music. He then brought Bratton, who was anxious for a funny “Palett cleaning” after directing the “inspection”, on board.
“The project was brought to me by Roger, and he was like” I have this project with Hillary Clinton, because she loves house music, “said Bratton.” I didn’t know she was a house head! “
Williams was excited by the enthusiasm he knew from Clinton, which serves as an executive producer on the film with his daughter Chelsea through their production company Hiddenlight. But he also came to the project with his own lifelong passion for house music.
“Hillary is from Chicago. So when I met Hillary I said ‘no one will think you are a house music lover. This is fantastic! “Said Williams. “I was on the dance floor in house music. It will take you to another place. There is a freedom to be on the dance floor in house music. “
Bratton’s connection to house music was also deeply personal, as he explained that its presence in the New York Nightlife scene characterized him to unpologetically be himself without concern for stereotypes about masculinity.
“For me, house music is the soundtrack for me that is growing up. As a child with a name Elegance, everyone assumed that I was gay, ”he said. “Everyone put pressure on me to be a” real man. “And then I carved into the limelight, this incredible nightclub in New York City, and for the first time the things I became ridiculed for or punished for superpowers. And the soundtrack with that liberation was house music. So yes this movie is about house music, but it is also about how queer, femme people and women can teach us all how to be free. “
