Spring break forever, really.
Multi -hypefenate filmmakers Harmony Corin will receive the trailblazer award at 2025 Sarasota Film Festival. This marks the first time he appeared at the festival, or some Florida film Festival at Gulf Coast near where he filmed “Spring switch“In 2012. Korine shot the NU-iconic film, all of which, except, launched A24 as a power department, in St. Petersburg, about 45 minutes north of Sarasota.
In addition to receiving the award, Korine will show its new film “Baby invasion” On Saturday, April 12 at New College, followed by a question and answer with this author.
In a statement Sarasota Film Festival Said Korine receives the Trailblazer Award “In the recognition of her bold, innovative and genre-defending contributions to the cinema world, which has constantly driven the boundaries of stories, art and expressions … Korine has proven to be an artist who is not afraid to tangle the Convention and challenge filmmaking.”
As a 20-year-old, Korine was discovered while skateboarding in Manhattan’s Washington Square Park by photographer Larry Clark. He went on to write the script for the controversial movie “Kids”, directed by Clark. It launched a career that continued with Korine’s own director’s debut, 1997’s landmark “Gummo”, followed by “Julien Donkey-Boy”, “Mister Lonely”, “Trash Humpers” and finally 2012’s “Spring Breakers.” A fantasy of sex, violence, Skrillex and an otentatious shorts collection, it is undoubtedly one of the most influential films of the 21st century and on Indieview’s list of the largest American indie films.
Based in Miami since then, Korine followed by “Spring Breakers” with 2019’s “The Beach Bum” and then 2024’s “Aggro Dr1ft.” The latter of these was the first release of the multimedia company he launched in 2023 called Edglrd, which tries to expand the opportunities for visual story, merging the experiences of film, games, XR and short -shaped content.
“Being able to celebrate Harmony Korine’s work is an exciting moment for the Sarasota Film Festival,” said Mark Famiglio, chairman of the Sarasota Film Festival and president of its board. “Harmony’s films have shaped culture and film in a deep way. His innovative and fearless attitude to stories continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences both. We are pleased to present him with this year’s Trailblazer Award as part of the 2025 festival.”
Having Korine’s question and answer on April 12 at Sarasota’s new college will be an important moment: The Liberal Arts College, long regarded for its commitment to the art, was the subject of a takeover of Gov Ron Desantiswho opposed his supposedly “woke up” curriculum. Korine’s work is apolitical but safe transfers and cross -border and willing to crush all parties, whether left or right. His appearance feels like a reconsideration of freedom of speech at New College.
The festival, which is going on April 4-13, will host multiple events at New College, including a display of Bookbanning documentary “The Librarians.” Other films in the festival’s range include “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Farther” and “The Wedding Bank”, Sarasota’s tradition continues to be the Great Sundance Catch-up festival for southeast.
