In this week’s episode of “Screen Talk” we look at Slow Sundance Market as well as the new form of the Oscar race afterKarla Sofía Gascón ‘S implosion.
There were some competitive purchases at the end of this year’s Sundance: Neon bought horror girl “Together”, Netflix acquired period Denis Johnson Adaptation “Train Dreams”, Janus and Sideshow bought art film “Peter Hujar’s day”, and A24 bought Breakout Eva Victor’s “Sorry Baby.”
But so far no one has picked up Bill Condon’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman”, which truly tries to digest a Kander & Ebb Broadway musical with a prison romance. If a distributor placed it well, there may be some measures for star Jennifer Lopez as an older prize, as well as Breakout Tonatiuh.
Netflix makes an Oscar game with Clint Bentley’s “Train Dreams”, with Joel Edgerton. And “Sorry Baby” can give a script node for Multi-Hyhenate Victor. Otherwise, the Oscar will be jumped from a strong lineup of documentaries such as “The Perfect Neighbour”, which Netflix picked up at the press time.
Fans of the Sundance portal are worried about over-current fans of the documentary “Selena and the dinos” And the audience winner “Twinless”, who published the clips of the films online, may lose future chances to watch Sundance competition films from their sofas. Both films were brought over the copyright.
We both brought up with a lot of films on the portal. (I liked the Sundance Grand Jury Prize Dramatic winner “Atropia”, with Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner in the lead role as incorrect lovers who act as imaginary roles during military training exercises for Iraq.)
On the Oscar front, Netflix has shared roads with ”Emilia Pérez“Best actress nominated Karla Sofía Gascón in the wake of her Offensive racist tweets. She will not show up for any Los Angeles events such as AFI, Critics Choice or Sag Awards; She stays in Europe. We’ll see if she shows up at Cesars, Baftas or Oscar. At the same time, Oscars has the ditches to pay tribute to the actors from previous winners. Now they will only do it with the best director.
What Oscars will be able to Netflix Rescue from the wreck? We look at the injuries that have been done on the perception of the film. Of the 13 record nominations “Emilia Pérez” served for a foreign language film, they are likely to continue to gather winnings to support actress Zoe Saldaña and best song “El Mal”. International feature films, once in the bag for “Emilia Pérez”, can now go to the other best picture foreign nominated, “I’m still here.”
With early Frontunner “Emilia Pérez” of best image contact, “The Brutalist” does it? Can “Conclave” or Ralph Fiennes win Baftas? “Wicked” could do well in Sag or PGA, whose members voted before Gascón Brouhaha.
And there is a lot of warmth behind the latest edition, “A Completely Unknown”, as nominated Timothée Chalamet challenges Adrien Brody and Fiennes. Many things can change between now and the end of the Oscar vote on Friday 18 February.
At least it is less boring, more unpredictable this year.
