SupermanThe suit is as iconic as the character itself, in all its red, blue and (sometimes) yellow belt glory. The latest version clear by David Corenswet is a visual step back to a more traditional depiction of the suit, after Henry Cavill And TV Tyler Hoechlin’s versions ditched its most discussed aspect. Of course, I’m talking about the red trunks – or panties, because they are often referred.
That underwear or not underwear, or how to know underwear, has been a gathering point for virtually all Superman productions. In the last big “Superman” adaptation, filmmaker Zach Snyder made away the tribes, which he said he couldn’t make “cool.”
“I struggled to keep them, but let’s not forget that the red trunks are left of the strong men with Victorian era, who had to wear meat -colored speech clothes and stems over it so they didn’t look naked. On the question of the tribes (or the lack of it) a decade later by Stephen Colbert, Cavill indicated that he would donate them if needed. “I really loved my suit, I thought it was pretty cool,” Cavill said (via wrap). “But if it were to happen again, I would definitely be open to the idea of adding the stems in some way, form or form.”
Now the semantics is for how exactly Supes looks with or without the red trunks back to the 50s with George Reeves. That actor said reportedly“I get a little too old to run around in my underwear,” towards the end of the production on “The Adventures of Superman.”
In a documentary about the DVD edition 2001 By 1978 Superhero Flick Granddaddy “Superman: The Movie”, the film’s Lois Lane, Margot Kidder, talked about the various pieces used for Christopher ReeveS suit. “(Producer) Alexander Salkind pronounced very early as we would start shooting about Superman,” either he has a big one or he has nothing. “So they put poor Christopher in this different range of sizes on the code piece under the costume in the red underpants, and some days Christopher would come out and he would be looking to hear (Kidder gestures). Which would make me go ‘ding ding ding ding’ (Kidder Mimes Girls the Code Piece), because they were all made of metal. He would go, ‘Kidder! Stop!'”
When Brandon Routh’s first photo was revealed in 2005 (for 2006’s “Superman Returns”), it triggered press and fan controversy over the size of Supermans, Ahem, Bulge. No, there were really many articles written about it, including this one from wired with the title “Battle of the Bulge.” The author Regina Lynn wrote: “About the real purpose of this is to avoid distracting the audience, it is backfired. They have only ensured that everyone who goes to this movie will take a long hard look at the red undies – which I suspect, is the real intention behind it all.”
New York Magazine quoted The movie’s costume designer Louise Mingenbach who said: “There was more discussion about Superman’s” package “than anything else on the suit. Was it too big? Wasn’t it big enough? Was it too pointed? For around? There was a job for about a month that only worked with code pieces. It was crazy.”
The Red Undies were even a great strife when Nicolas Cage almost played Superman in the abandoned Tim Burton-directed “Superman Lives” The way back in 1998. Per the excellent documentary “The Death of Superman Lives” (Available on Youtube), Cage said during a costume assembly, “the only thing is, what was wrong with the original suit was that he wore his underpants on the outside … but maybe if it was darker blue – you know, maybe if it wasn’t red.” Basketballs, believe it or not, was even discussed as an alternative for this incorrect production.
“We all tried different ways to avoid it, in fact, for humans tend to make fun of that element on Superman,” said Colleen AtwoodIt would be a costume designer for that movie, in the documentary.
Well, now that Corenswet has taken over, the red tribes are back, and it was apparently something that the actor himself was insistent at, as author/director James Gunn Explained to Gizmodo In December 2024.
“We tried all these different versions, and we screened tested with stems and no trunks,” he said. “And one of the things that David said is that Superman wants children not to be afraid of him. He is a stranger. He has these incredible powers. He shoots rays out of his eyes … He is so incredibly powerful, can be considered scary, individual and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity.
Corenswet seems to have made the right call, because “Superman” has launched with impressive $ 122 million Domestic total this weekend.
