After officially announces a new partnership with Google Deepmind to produce short films with Gen-Ai and some of Google’s recently announced tool Last month, filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has revealed the first of three planned shorts created Using Generative AI.
Led by Eliza McNitt and produced by Aronofsky, the short one has the title “Ancestra”, and it premiered at Tribeca Festival on Thursday evening. Per an official statement is 8-minute’s short “mixes live-action film from a crew of 200+ artists and technologists.”
The brief was inspired by McNitt’s “own life -threatening birth, when doctors discovered a hole in her heart” and aims to “highlight pregnancy challenges that are rarely seen in stories and break through technical obstacles that once made these stories impossible to visualize.” The filmmaker “Transform (ED) Personal Family Archive to a visually amazing experience, including pictures of her similarity in the uterus.”
As IndieWires Brian Welk previously reported“McNitt trained the AI models on their own baby pictures and other photos taken by her late father to create a newborn infant with a story that could be shaped by her own biography.” The short ones use both live-action film creation and generative AI-created sequences, including those entering a woman’s uterus, which is inspired by McNitt’s own complicated delivery.
The short one is the first to come out of Aronofsky’s new venture with Google Deepmind, called Primordial Soup, which aims to produce new shorts that are combined, which IndieWire reported last month, “new technology and story and has the assignment to create frameworks for AI’s role in filmmaking and put artists in the driver’s place for technology.
McNitt is known for a previous VR series, the three-part “spheres”, which was executive produced by Aronofsky and contained the votes from Millie Bobby Brown, Jessica Chastain and Patti Smith as Kosmos voices. It was the first VR project ever acquired from Sundance.
While the next two primordial soup shorts and their filmmakers have not yet been formally announced, an official statement noted that both “will explore new applications of I seeGoogle Deepmind’s Video Generation Model. “
