“Mortar of Sheep” was considered to be one of the 50 biggest films of the ages of the vision and audio critics’ survey in 2022. Indie 1977 was also among the first 50 films mentioned to the Library of Congress National Film Registry 1990.
“Killer of Sheep” centers in town (Henry Gayle Sanders), a slaughterhouse worker who is disconnected from his wife, his children and himself because of his astonishing work.
The official synopsis reads: “Stan and his neighbors are struggling just to get by, let alone come forward. Only the children, who jump from roof to roof, seem to achieve a mobility that avoids their elderly. Burnett’s film focuses on everyday life in black communities in a way that is rarely seen in American film combinations lyrical elements with a sharp neorealist, documentary that combines deep shade with riveting simplicity. ”

Charles Burnett shot the film about a year of weekends on a budget less than $ 10,000. He was a UCLA doctoral student at that time; The “MORRER OF SHEEP” helped to start the LA uprising Black Indie-Filmmaking movement.
“Killer of Sheep” continued to get the Critics’ Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1981.
Burnett said in a press release that the origin of the function was based on his own background.
“I come from a working class environment and I wanted to express what reality was,” Burnett said. “People tried to get a job, and when they found jobs they were completely busy holding them. And they were confronted with other problems, with serious problems, for example, which made things much more difficult. “
“Killer of Sheep” has been digitally restored to 4K and remaster by UCLA Film & Television Archive, Milestone Films and Criterion Collection. The restoration was monitored by Ross Lipman and Jillian Borders, in consultation with Burnett.
The 4K restoration also restores the original closing song for the film, Dinah Washington’s performance of “unforgettable.”
A previous photochemical restoration was funded by the Ahmanson Foundation in collaboration with the Sundance Institute. The film was preserved from the original 16mm B&W negative A and the B rolls, the original 35 mm three-track master sound mix and the original 16mm master mix.
