The author/director Ahn wrote together in 2025 “The Wedding Banquet” with the original co -educator James Schamus, who together wrote the film in 1993 with Lee.
The Official synopsis For the function, which debuted at Sundance 2025, reads: “Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and her partner Lee (Gladstone) have been unlucky with their IVF treatments, but cannot afford to pay for a new round. At the same time, their friend has my (he Gi-chan), the completed scion of a multinational corporate empire, lots of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa. When his commitment -phobic boyfriend Chris (Yang) rejects his proposal, my offer gives Angela instead: a green short marriage in exchange for financing of Lees IVF. The original “wedding banquet” followed a bisexual Taiwanese immigrant (Winston Chao) who marries a woman from China partly to appease her parents, traveling from Taiwan to throw them a traditional wedding banquet that reveals his true sexuality. Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet” won Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1993.
