Barbie Ferreira may not return to “Euphoria”, but the actress makes her presence known with indie dramedy”Bob Trevino likes it.”
The filmwhich debuted at SXSW 2024, stars Ferreira as a struggling janitor trying to cope with his absentee father. While Ferreira has had roles in “Unpregnant” and “Nope”, it’s “Bob” that puts Ferreira on the map as one to watch — and she even executive produces alongside her on-screen co-star and surrogate father John Leguizamo.
Tracie Laymon writes and directs the semi-autobiographical feature, which is inspired by the true friendship between her befriending a real-life stranger while searching for her father online.
The official synopsis reads: “Lily Trevino (Ferreira) often plays the role of caretaker to people like her father, who should be taking care of her, and longs for familial connection. When her father, Robert (French Stewart), finally checks out of her life, Lily searches for him on the Internet. She tries to befriend a man she thinks is her father. But instead of finding Robert Trevino, Lily and Bob’s blossoming friendship becomes an important source of connection and healing for both, and has the power to change each of their lives forever.”
Lauren “Lolo” Spencer and Rachel Bay Jones also star.
“Bob Trevino Likes It” won 13 film festival audience awards in its circuit screenings. The IndieWire review considered the film to be a “tear-jerker” which is grounded in the fact that it is a true story based on first-time writer/director Tracie Laymon’s own encounter with a Bob Laymon (not her father).
“Leguizamo may give one of her career-best performances in the feature, but it’s Ferreira’s surprising command of the screen that’s most memorable. With this feature, she proves her own talent ranks with that of her A-list ‘Euphoria’ co-stars Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and Zendaya,” the review reads. “Ferreira may have been sidelined in “Euphoria” Season 2but with ‘Bob’ her range is obvious. Ferreira sobs hysterically, spouts horrific tales of an abusive childhood and slowly opens up, all in the course of a two-hour film. It’s a quiet film, one whose tension is in waiting to see how far Lily and Bob will take their almost-daughter-father relationship (will Lily finally meet Bob’s wife? Will both Bobs finally cross paths?). Do we like it? We love it.”
Laymon is producing the film with Sean Mullin, Edgar Rosa and Felipe Dieppa.
