Putting my cards away 2024 movie schedule on the table, I’m honestly not expecting too many surprises from the remaining films on the lineup that will be premiering between now and the end of the year. That said, even have a decent grip on what we know about Nightcrawler hadn’t prepared me for what we’ve seen in the first trailer for director Marielle Heller’s latest.
For a movie that revolves around the trials and tribulations of being a stay-at-home mom, this new movie has some very sharp teeth. Now I have read the synopsis for Amy Adams movie starring, and author Rachel Yoder’s novel has been on my “to read” pile ever since I saw it on shelves in 2021.
But that knowledge didn’t prepare me for Ms. Adams actually turning into a dog in the middle of this Nightcrawler trailer. And that moment, quite frankly, seems to lock in the rest of this upcoming horror movies promises energy on site.
To be fair, I knew there was an expectation watching Nightbitch’s protagonist who anticipates the possibility of her turning into a symbol of four-legged freedom. That said, I didn’t actually know that a transformation of any kind would be shown, which is where the line between a dark comedy and a dark horror comedy seems to go.
My expectations for Nightcrawler has risen a little higher after seeing this trailer in action, and it’s all thanks to Amy Adams’ transformation into a commanding husky/husky near-breed. On the subject of dog casting, landing a dog that feels like a natural fit to be Ms. Adam’s animal counterpart.
Knowing that Nightcrawler is one of them upcoming book-to-screen adaptations we’ll have to look forward to this movie having a bit more prominence on my radar in the near future. That much is especially true after this year’s box office gave audiences a huge dog-loving win with the release of king arthur, which apparently prompted Mark Wahlberg’s grateful attitude towards viewers who loved that movie. But at the same time, if you loved Arthur the kingI don’t think so Nightcrawler will be a slam dunk.
I mean, if the distinction of whether Amy Adams turns into a dog or not features so distinctly in the first reel of film, what exactly is Marielle Heller’s film hiding? There is also the potential for another addition to our list of moments where a dog saved the day in a movie to not involving another member of Amy Adams’ pack being killed?
We’ll see what happens when Nightcrawler looks set to lead the pack at the box office when it opens in theaters on December 6. But if you keep an eye on this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the picture will have its festival premiere on September 7.
