The fourth season of Quinta Brunson’s Emmy winning “Abbott Elementary” Is about Ava Coleman, the incompetent, self -observed school principal played by Janelle James. For the first time, viewers see a vulnerable side of the attentive character when she falls in love with the tech O’Shon (Matthew Law), joins her foreign father (Keith David) and is pushed by the school board. She even stops the longing for the ubiquitous (fictitious) documentary camera crew that captures the Abbott staff every move.
In front of Season 5, James talked about Thewrap about Ava’s development and why she will never give up her night job.
Camera-
“In season 1 it is her idea to have all the cameras there. But for this season I made a decision to go back from it, because this is her showing another taste of herself and she is less hammy than she used to be. This season, more than anyone else, it feels like I am, it seems very real. Look for AVA. ”
Occupy her game
“I think (Keith David) is perfect. I mean, we look alike. I was:” Is that my dad? “The gravity in what is happening between (our characters) and our relationship, he takes it perfectly, and he is a dramatic actor gives me something to work, to match and rise to the level at the level, but there is still comedy in our serious moments – as, she never drops her personality so I have been as much as I have been, there is a lot that they are with a challenge. Have been super comfortable for me. “

22 sections and a stand-up career
“Oh, (stand-up) makes me happy. It’s a different muscle than acting. I don’t think it’s different than an actor who goes off and doing theater during the summer. I am interested in making other actors, but unfortunately because our season is so long, many things I would have been interested in or have been offered are not possible. Stand-up Is something that I can always go back to and make sure my comedy muscle is elaborate. “
The long game
“I am in it as long as Quinta wants to be in it, and I know she has other things she wants to do, so I will only continue to be grateful that I am involved in digging such a dynamic character, and that she trusts me with this. Even though I’m on a comedy, Quinta has done it so I show it.”
A version of this story first ran in the comedy emission of Thewrap’s Awards Magazine. Read more from the question here.
