Bob Dylan story “A Completely Unknown” has been named 2024’s best movie for older audience at The Aarp The Magazine’s Movies for Wadup’s Awards, which took place on Saturday at a long delayed ceremony hosted by Alan Cumming.
James Mangold’s movie about Dylan’s early years in the New York People Scene and his transition to playing Electric Rock ‘n’ Roll was the only movie that won more than one award at the AARP ceremony, and also won in the best time capsule category.
Otherwise, the winners, chosen by the editors of the newspaper Aarp, were spread, among a number of films: Jacques Audiard won the director of “Emilia Pérez” while “Wicked” won for screenwriters, “Sing Sing” for Ensemble, “Thelma” for best film and “Super /Man: The Christopher Reeve Story ”won for documentary.
Winners in the actress categories, which are limited to artists 50 years and older, included Oscar Frontrunners Demi Moore for the “subject” and Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist” in the main categories. In the supportive categories, the winners Joan Chen for “Didi” (over a field that included Oscar -nominated Isabella Rossellini for “Conclave”) and Peter Sarsgaard for “September 5” (over Oscar -nominated Guy Pearce for “The Brutalist”).
“Shōgun” continued to dominate all TV prizes and won in the category Best TV series or limited series that also included “The Crown”, “Hacks”, “Palm Royale” and “Slow Horses.”
TV actors went to Jodie Foster for “True Detective: Night Country” and Jon Hamm for “Fargo.”
At the ceremony, Glenn Close also received AARP’s 2025 Career Achievement Award.
Since the films for adult awards were first named a best picture in 2001, only four AARP winners have won Oscar for Best Picture, all in a nine-year route between 2010 and 2018 that included “King’s speech”, “12 years a slave”, “spotlight” and “Green Book.”
This year’s ceremony, which took place at Beverly Wilshire Hotel, was originally planned to take place on Saturday, January 11, but was postponed because of the Los Angeles fire fires. It was eventually surprised for Saturday February 8, a day already included Director Guild Awards, The Producers Guild Awards and Annie Awards. To find space on the most narrow day for the season, Aarp started the red carpet at 10:30 and started the show at noon.
The ceremony will be broadcast on “fantastic performances” at PBS on February 23. It is a collection for the AARP Foundation, a charity that benefits vulnerable older adults.
