The international microcosm of the elite ball now gets its own fictional drama. “The amazing Mrs Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino Write, direct and executive produces Prime Video Series ”Star“About rival dance companies that change their best dancers as part of a marketing campaign.
Charlotte Gainsbourg Leads the series such as Geneviève, the Interims Director General of L’Opera Francais and Le Ballet National, who develops a plan with Jack (“The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” Emmy winner Luke Kirby), the CEO of the Metropolitan Ballet Theater, to trade his ballerinas for a year. While the series is not based on actual Dancers switch between Paris and New York City In 2009, it is evidence that sometimes real life, especially in the dance world, is stranger than fiction. (The co -creator Palladino told Vanity that it was Frederick Wiseman instead documentary “Dance: Paris Opera Ballet” that inspired “Star.”)
Kelly Bishop, Yanic Truesdale, Gideon Glick, Lou de Laâge and David Alvarez also play in the series.
“Melankolia” Alum Gainsbourg told Vanity Fair that she believes that “Étoile” is her English-language comedy debut.
“For me it was very new to do a comedy in English,” Gainsbourg said. “I’ve made comedies in France and still people see me as a serious actress – but I love comedies.”
Gainsbourg credited Sherman-Palladino for the tone of the series; Sherman-Palladino was also a dancer before her TV career. “Étoile” is the second ballet centric series she has created. The first was the short-lived ABC family’s series “Bunheads” which was canceled in 2012.
“‘Bunheads’ gave us a little taste of fun to be in that world on a smaller scale,” said Sherman-Palladino. “I trained as a dancer, so I have become mystified that nothing has really come close to capturing the strange dance world. They are an odd, amazing bunch of people.”
She added, “I stopped dancing when I realized that someone would actually pay me to do something, and I could have a sandwich. (Men) all my life, I have known (it) without ballet, the world is a smaller place. And a place that I do not think many want to be in, even if they don’t realize it.”
From Amazon MGM Studios, “étoile” is the executive of Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino and Dhana Rivera Gilbert. Scott Ellis will serve as co-expative producer.
“Étoile” premieres on April 24 on Prime Video. Check out the trailer below.
