Barbie Ferreira breaks out in the SXSW movie

The editor’s note: This review was originally published in 2024 SXSW Film & TV festival. “Bob Trevino likes it“Opens in theaters from road attractions on Friday 21 March.

The year for “Barbie” continues until 2024. But we’re not talking about to Barbie: Now is that Barbie Ferreirais time to talk about.

Breakout -Star “Euphoria”, who Different roads with the HBO series before season 3Leads “Bob Trevino likes it”, her first movie since the announcement about the show output. While Ferreira has had Roles in “oregnants” and “nope,” It is “Bob” who puts Ferreira on the map as one to watch — and she even produces it along with her co-star John iguizamo.

In the movie Stars Ferreira like Lily Trevino, a 25-year-old home caregiver who struggles with self-overpass. The source of most of her misery? Her narcissistic addict Far Bob (French Stewart). Lily cannot see the injury that Bob has caused, and after an explosive fight where Bob blames Lily for hugging his bachelor’s degree, he interrupts her for good.

Thus, Lily is now left actually Abandoned, and she chooses to remain emotionally distant from her bubbling client, played by “The Sex Lives of College Girls” star Lauren “Lolo” Spencer and swallows in her room and rolls the internet. It is only when Lily tries to Cyber-Stjälk her own father that she feels she meets a new low … and Facebook friends a faceless Other Bob Trevino (Euduizamo) whose approval she longs for. Every time this bob “likes” one of her posts, especially those who are flashbacks to Lily’s neglected childhood (Baby Lily blows out light on a birthday cake, between Lily playing basketball, etc.), it is as if Lily finally gets the validation and love from her father. Too bad this Bob is not biologically related to her.

At the same time, Leguizamos Bob has to do with his own questions. His marriage to his loving wife (Rachel Bay Jones) has been anesthetized ever since the loss of their infantsson, and Bob tries to stifle all pain by overworking for his racist manager. Lily’s presence also comes at the right time for Bob.

Lily and Bob 2.0 eventually meet, and Bob’s inherent kindness dismantles Lily’s desperate approval-seeking behavior. Sure, Lily has boundary issues, but her life story makes her be a therapist in training screams (and seek her own psychiatric help) after just one session. After Lily shares with Bob how her father got rid of her childhood dog and blamed her to “abuse” it, Bob takes her to an animal welfare to get in touch with a puppy. Bob knows what Lily needs, and there is never any undercurrent discomfort: these are only two people looking for family love, and they have found it in each other.

“Bob Trevino likes it” is a tears of a movie, but it is based on the fact that it is also A true story based on the first time author-director Tracie Laymon’s Own Encounter with a Bob Laymon. Eleguizamo can give one of its best career performances in the feature, but it is Ferreira’s surprising command on the screen that is the most memorable. With this feature, she proves that her own talent is among it in her A-list “Euphoria” co-stars Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and Zendaya.

Ferreira may have been on the page in “Euphoria” season 2But with “Bob” her range is obvious. Ferreira screams hysterically, loses terrible stories about an abusive childhood and opens slowly, all in a two -hour film. It is a quiet movie, one whose excitement is waiting to see how far Lily and Bob will take their quasi daughter-father relationship (will Lily finally meet Bob’s wife? Will both Bobs finally cross roads?). “Do we like” that? We love it.

Rating: B+
