The Golden Globes Organization announced Friday that it would no longer pay the $ 75,000 annual salary awarded former Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) members, the group that votes on the annual film and television prize winners that Thewrap has learned.
Golden Globes President Helen Hoehne shared the news in a special zoom meeting on Friday 28 February to about 50 voice members. The move came as a shock to the former members of HFPA who signed a five -year contract in June 2023 with Penske Media Eldridge, the organization’s new owner, which guaranteed a base salary of $ 75,000 per year. The salary was specific to voters who were grandfather in the new organizational structure from HFPA, which was the former Golden Globes voice body.
Hoehne announced the members that they would be offered a $ 102,500 graduation package. Each member – who had to apply for accreditation on an annual basis – was allowed to continue as voters in Globes 2026 but will not get to.
The voting body had been reviewed for the paid element in its previous years. The change to stop paying voters matches other major price processes including Oscars, Emmys and Grammys, all of which have members vote Pro Bono.
According to THR’s reportA spokesman for the Golden Globes said that the policy change was “a recognition of continuing to pay members could add an idea of bias at the vote.” The representative also said that the graduation package was in line with the contractual obligations for which the company was responsible.
2021 met Golden Globe’s serious criticism after a bomb shell Los Angeles Times investigation revealed HFPA had no black members. The organization met with immediate backlash from prominent members of Hollywood including “Selma” leader Ava Duvernay and Powerhouse TV producer Shonda Rhimes, among others. The hashtag #timesupglobes started trendy and led to sweeping changes for Globes.
A major change in the award was ownership. HFPA was once non -profit but is now the profit -making Golden Globes LLC and is owned by Penske Media Corporation. The voting body also expanded from 87 members to over 300 members in 85 different countries. The 50 former members of HFPA now constitute a small subset of the total voting body.
