Pedro Pascal in the Anthology of the 80s


If you have ever known a ton of nostalgia for Bay Area in the 1980s, “Freaky Tales” Is the movie for you.

The latest effort from filmmaking Duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck – who cut their teeth on independent films such as “Sugar” and “Mississippi Grind” before Direct “Captain Marvel” – is an omnibus film Consisting of four vignettes set in Oakland in 1987. The film is a broadcast of almost everything that shaped the 1980s pop culture, from hip hop and sci-fi blockbuster to the biggest sports stars and kung FU films of the decade. The film premieres first at the Sundance Film Festival 2024, with Lionsgate which eventually picked it up for a theater edition in April.

An official synopsis for the film reads: “Set 1987 Oakland,”Freaky stories“Is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters-a NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teenage points, neo-Nazis and a collection course in a fever dream about showdowns and battles.”

“Freaky Tales” is written and directed by Boden and Fleck. The movie Stars Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-Young Yoo, Angus Cloud and Tom Hanks.

The anthology format makes it easier to fit big names in the role, with HANKS that looks like a video store owner. “Freaky Tales” also provides an exhibition for Jay Ellis, which has a big year with two upcoming streaming shows and a mentoring role in Rabbit Hole Whiskey’s Creative Spirit Contest. In a new interview with Indiewire, Ellis quoted to work with Boden and Fleck on “Freaky Tales” as an experience that shaped the advice he will offer the winning filmmaker.

“I have been lucky enough to be around some fantastic, fantastic filmmakers from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and Joe Kosinski to Melina Matsoukas and Prentice Penny. And I’ve got to work with some really, really, really cool people, ”Ellis said. “And then I’ve had to go out and direct myself, obviously. And so I hope that all the experience I have soaked from these people, I can only OSA into this winner, to this person I am going to mentor. “
