“The Substance” and “Wicked” were the big movie winners at the 12th annual makeup artists and hair stylists Guild Awards and took two awards each at the ceremony that took place on Saturday night in Los Angeles.
Coralie Fargeat’s body horror movie “The Substance” won in best modern make-up and best special makeup effects, while “Wicked” won for best period and/or character makeup and best period and/or character hair styling.
“The Last Showgirl” won in the last movie category, best contemporary hair styling.
Over the past 11 years of Muah’s Awards, one of the winners has won the Oscar Prize for best makeup and hairstyles nine times. Six of these times the Oscar-winning film had taken home several Muah’s awards. The period make-up category has contained most Oscar winners, seven, followed by special makeup effects with five, period hair styling with two and modern makeup and modern hair styling with one each.
But twice over the past three years, with “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” 2022 and “Poor Things” last year, Oscar winner had been nominated for but not won any Muah’s prizes.
This year, “The Substance” and “Wicked” are both nominated to Oscars, along with “Another Man”, “Emilia Perez” and “Nosferatu.” While “another man” and “Emilia Perez” were nominated for the Muah’s Awards, “Nosferatu” was not.
In the TV categories, “Saturday night live” in the categories specials or live events and won four awards. In the five TV series categories, no show won more than one, with individual prizes to “Emily in Paris”, “Palm Royale”, “The Penguin”, “Abbott Elementary” and “Bridgeton.”
“The Jennifer Hudson Show” won both prizes in the TV categories during the day.
The show took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza and hosted Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson. Alison Janney was also honored at the ceremony with Distinguished Artisan Award. The Research Council for Makeup Artists (RCMA Makeup) received the Vanguard Award, while Lifetime Achievement Awards was given to Make-up artist Todd Mcintosh and Hair stylist Peter Tothpal.
