Rupert Grint’s Dark Comedy ‘Sick Note’ Finally Hits Netflix – But There’s a Catch

After years of uncertainty, the cult-favorite black comedy series Sick Note is finally making its way to Netflix UK. Starring Harry Potter legend Rupert Grint alongside Nick Frost, the show will be available for streaming starting Monday, February 10. However, there’s bittersweet news for fans—while the show is making its long-awaited return to a major platform, its future remains unresolved.

A Series Left in Limbo

Sick Note first premiered in 2017 on Sky One, instantly gaining a dedicated following due to its absurdly dark humor and unpredictable twists. Before the first season even aired, a second season had already been commissioned, raising hopes that the show would become a long-running hit.

However, after season two, the series entered what many in the industry refer to as “TV show limbo.” In 2021, co-creator Nat Saunders admitted that Sick Note was neither officially renewed nor canceled, leaving its fate uncertain. Fellow writer James Serafinowicz later revealed that the team had even written the first two episodes of season three, but they never saw the light of day. “I don’t even know if they were read,” he shared on Twitter. “I think it’ll forever be unresolved, unfortunately.”

The Premise – A Lie That Spins Out of Control

Sick Note follows Daniel Glass (Rupert Grint), an insurance agent who is mistakenly diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer due to the incompetence of his doctor, Iain Glennis (Nick Frost). Realizing that people suddenly treat him better, Daniel chooses to maintain the falsehood, setting off a chain reaction of lies, blackmail, and increasingly outlandish situations. With his reputation and personal life on the line, Daniel teams up with Dr. Glennis to keep the ruse alive—only to find themselves in deeper trouble with each passing episode.

A Cult Favorite Among Fans

Despite its unresolved status, Sick Note has remained a beloved hidden gem. Fans on Reddit and social media have raved about its addictive nature, with many praising its dark humor and binge-worthy cliffhangers.

  • One fan wrote: “I haven’t had this much fun watching a show in a while. Every episode almost ends on a cliffhanger, which would’ve been frustrating weekly, but binging it was a blast.”
  • Another commented: “The ridiculous twists and turns made it so entertaining. It’s super suspenseful and totally addictive.”
  • A third fan added: “If the episodes were longer, it probably wouldn’t work as well, but the pacing makes it perfect for a binge-watch.”

The Catch – Not for US Audiences

While Netflix UK subscribers can finally enjoy the show, US audiences are out of luck. Sick Note was available on Netflix US until November 2023, when it was quietly removed from the platform, making it inaccessible for American viewers.

With Rupert Grint’s growing presence in Hollywood, thanks to his work on M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant and Knock at the Cabin, perhaps the renewed attention on Sick Note could spark conversations about reviving the series. For now, UK fans can relish the chaotic brilliance of Daniel Glass’ misadventures—while the rest of the world remains in limbo, much like the fate of Sick Note itself.
