The 77th annual Director Guild Awards were one of several awards that took place on Saturday 8 February on a hectic evening in Los Angeles, with less than a month before the Academy Awards. Judd Apatow hosted the ceremony for the sixth time.
Four of this year’s five DGA nominated were also nominated for Oscar, with Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”), Sean Baker (“Anora”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”) and James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”)))))) Landing nomes from both groups but DGA -nominated Edward Berger (“Conclave”) were replaced by Coralie Fargeat (“Subject”) by Academy’s Director Branch.
Director Guild Award for Theatrical Feature Film is one of the most reliable Oscar indicators. During the first 76 years of the Director Guild Awards, first given in 1948, the DGA winner has won Oscar for Best Picture 68 times, and his or her film has won the best picture Oscar 57 times.
Over the past ten years, however, the picture/director has taken place more often. During that time, DGA and the academy have agreed on the director nine times, but the movie that won with Guilden has only won the best picture Oscar five times.
Voting for theater films closed on Friday 7 February, which means that the debate about malignant “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón may have a hand in determining the result of the race.
Nominated for the first time theater function included Ramell Ross for “Nickel Boys”, which is a nominated Oscar Best Picture; Payal Kapadia for “everything we imagine as light”; Megan Park for “My Old Ass”; Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel for “Armand”; and Sean Wang for “Dìdi.”
In the TV categories, “Shōgun”, “The Bear” and “The Penguin” were the leaders with three nominations per piece.
Ang Lee received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Mary Rae Thewlis was honored with Robert B. Aldrich Service Award and Thomas J. Whelan took home the Frank Capra Achievement Award.
