When John CarpenterS “They live“Released in 1988, it became an immediate favorite among sci-fi enthusiasts for their SLU, scary story about foreigners who controlled us via subliminal messages that could be deliberately perceived by wearing special sunglasses. Carpenter I thought film As a precautionary story about the dangers of unlimited capitalism, a theme that has only increased resonance during the 37 years since he did so.
The lasting popularity of ”They live“Among the genre fans have given a number of special editions on Physical media Over the years, and now there is a particularly attractive for carpenters Avicionados who wants to simulate how they first experienced “they live” back in the 1990s: a new widescreen VHS Version from Britain’s Vice Press Home video.
VHS -fetishism has increased in recent years, partly thanks to Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary’s “Video Archives” podcast And partly as an extension of the greater increase in the popularity of physical media among cinefiles as a reaction to the volatile quality of flow. Nostalgia, of course, also plays a role, because those of us who became age in the VHS era have an almost pavlovic response to the look and feeling of the chunky black bands.
“They Live” is the latest in a series of collectibles editions from Vice Press Home video playing on the nostalgia. The company began with the publishing of Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead II” and Dario Argentos “Suspiria”, and last year they produced a VHS version of Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” which beautifully replicated VHS editions from Back in the Format’s Glane Time.

“They Live” will be released in two editions: a grinding case “They Live, We Sleep” edition containing art designed by Florey and contains one of five screen -printed, white ties with slogans from the film. “Collector’s Edition” has a reversible cover, with the front including art by Vice Press Home Video founder and artist Matt Ferguson, with the reversible, alternative page including the original key art with Roddy Piper.
Either way, Carpenter completion is likely to have difficulty avoiding the desire, as the foreigners in “they live” would urge, consume.
