The race permit
The Best costume design Nominations are “A complete unknown,” “Conclave,” “Gladiator II,” “Nosferatu,” and “Evil,” Which is the favorite. But “a completely unknown” surprise entry can be a dark horse.
Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” tells the history of origin to Elphaba/The Wicked Witch (Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda the good witches (Oscar-nominated Ariana Grande). Costume designer Paul Tazewell’s attitude to Elphaba and Glinda’s suits was to create deliberate differences and highlight the composition of dark and light, structured versus refined, using a connection to nature for ElphaBa and a liquid sensitivity to Galinda.
“A completely unknown,” James Mangold’s Bob Dylan Biopic with the best actor nominated Timothée Chalamet, chronicle of the people in New York’s West Village in 1961 to the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, where he became electric. Costume designer Arianne Phillips was responsible for dressing the charam as FreeWheelin ‘Dylan with about 67 costume changes, as well as the large ensemble. She was on the project for four years but was assisted by a six -month delay due to Covid and waited for Mangold and the availability of the Chalam. Her research led to the discovery that Dylan was a thorough agency that modeled by the people of the people Woody Guthrie with Dungarees and Pendleton shirts.

“Nosferatu”, director Robert Eggers’ Vampire filmis a new time for the pre-Victorian story of Gothic horror. It plays Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, the object of his wish and Nicholas Houl as her husband. The social status of the characters is part of the costumes DNA and affects everything. Go-to costume designer Linda Muir carefully designed Ellen’s wardrobe, for example to convey her troubled state of mind. Another world connection to Orlok provides an essential quality to their clothes.
“Conclave”, director Edward Berger’s follow-up of his Oscar-winning “All Quiet on the Western Front”, is a religious thriller adapted from the Robert Harris novel about a Cardinal (Ralph Fiennes) who has the task of finding a successor to the deceased The Pope, who had a dangerous secret. Costume designer Lisy Christl (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) dresses the papal prisoners for a role containing three other cardinals (played by Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Lucian Msamati). Christl became creative with different fabrics, sewing and deeper colors. Because so many of the characters are dressed in identical red clothes, she differentiated through such details as crosses, rings, shoes and overcoats.
“Gladiator II”, Ridley Scott’s sequel to his Oscar winner, takes place two decades later when Roman Empire continues to implode, which gives an inheritance opportunity to go to costume designer Janty Yates (who won Oscar for “Gladiator”) and Meddesigner Dave Crossman (“Napoleon”), which created the costumes for the Roman military and gladiators. For Denzel Washington’s Macrinus, Yates took inspiration from the painters Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Leon Gerome to deliver classic Roman clothing with abundance. She crossed the top for the eccentric emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) with lots of embroidery, gold on gold and silver. There is some modern touch to Lucilla (rewritten by Connie Nielsen), whose costumes pay small nods to the 20th century designers Halston and Courreges.
