I don’t know which is approaching faster: the beginning of what we see upcoming 2025 movies before our eyes, or the holiday season? It doesn’t matter, because the two things go hand in hand, and Netflix’s first trailer for Back in action feels like an early present we can open.
Now that it was long overdue Jamie Foxx/Cameron Diaz action comedy has given us a first look at its plot, and all the fun it entails, I think it’s safe to say this picture looks to be worth the wait. To be fair, I have to admit that I might just be a little biased, since espionage-flavored stories are my jam.
So seeing the story of Emily (Cameron Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx) being forced back into the spy game, after presumably retiring to start a family, feels like it works in my wheelhouse. See the kinds of stunts, explosions and humor you’d expect from a picture that Back in actionand you have one of the best the reasons for Diaz’s retirement.
One big thing we have to address right out of the gate is the fact that this picture was completed in the wake of Jamie Foxx’s hospitalization in early 2023. The high-profile incident occurred in the middle of Back in Action’s production, and Foxx’s recovery story has been one of the sweetest comebacks to witness in real time.
Seeing the Oscar winner kick ass and crack with Cameron Diaz feels like a reward to anyone who has followed his career, and it’s nice to see both of these Hollywood A-listers make that title really work. Believe it or not, this weekend was originally supposed to be the big day for director Seth Gordon’s blockbuster.
That said, it wasn’t surprising to see Back in action delayed to 2025 of his home studio. As Red One is set to make its box office debut on the old November 15 release date, it would have pitted Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz against Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. To be completely truthful, I’d rather see them merge than compete, because what fun that would be to film be?
And if you’re not totally sold on the bonkers nature Back in action, then consider the following press still of a duct taped Glenn Close dual guns:
January is always the start of a new year, where the conflicting forces of new optimism and longing for the holiday season to be over battle it out in our heads. Which just circles us back to the notion of having an image that Back in action looking forward to that symbolically dreary month feels like a gift.
Unfortunately, we’re getting the tag on this gift to wait for Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz’s espionage suit, only on Netflix, starting January 17, 2025. In the meantime, be sure to keep it Netflix subscription active if you want to be in the action; and don’t forget to 2024 movie schedule still has some heavy hits waiting for audiences!
