While he is passionate about filmmaking, Redford was also an activist for the climate. In 2005, he founded the Redford Center, a non -profit organization dedicated to “environmental impact,” according to his website. Through its mission, the center says its films have “Stopped the construction of harmful coal systems, restored the Colorado River Delta, reconnected people to nature and helped to speed up the pure energy revolution. “
In 2016, the Redford received presidential medal for freedom from the then president Barack Obama for his work in both the film and the climate space.
“As an actor, director, producer and as advocate he has not stopped,” Obama said during the ceremony. “We admire Bob not only for his remarkable spectacle, but for having figured out what we would do next.”
It was actually not until 2018 as Redford – who share four children with ex wife Lola van Wagenen– The decision to slow down and spend more time with their family.
“I just think I’ve had a long career that I am very pleased with,” Redford told The Associated Press at that time. “It has been so long, since I was 21 years old. I think now when I come in in the 80s, it may be time to go for pension and spend more time with my wife and family.”
