Rock Film The festival returns for its eighth year to Coastal New York City – it is the Rockaway beach if you are unknown – with a series of Al Fresco shows and musical performances. Indieview shares details exclusively below before the event which takes place August 20-24.
Highlights include the East Coast’s premiere of Hailey Gates’ War Satire “Atropia,” game Alia Shawkat and Callum TurnerAnd winner of the Sundance Grand Jury award in this year’s dramatic competition. (Luca Guadagnino is also counted among the film’s producers). Xander Robins SXSW Special Jury Award winning documentary “The Python Hunt,” Made by Lance Oppenheimer also comes to Rockaway. The eccentric nonfiction film follows a crew of amateur worm hunters for 10 days in Florida Everglades.
The Rockaway movie festival will also screen stop-motion animation icons the quay brothers’ Latest movie, “Sanatorium under The Sign of the Hourglass”, their first feature in 20 years. Other films include the North American premiere of Swiss filmmaker Alain Tanner’s new restoration of “In the White City”, a 1983 film, for this festival, which follows a sailor. A collection of William Wegman shorts for all ages shows the artist’s dog collaboration, many of whom eventually appeared on series like “Sesame Street.”
This year’s edition concludes with two of Paul Clipson’s rarely showed works in 16mm with live music by his close partner Jefre Cantu-iema. San Francisco experimental filmmakers, who died in 2018, were best known for creating sensory cascades of double exposures that melt light and color.

Courtney Muller, program director said: “We see our festival as a complete, continuous sequence where a program flows into next year and this year we took inspiration from stories about renewal where ends will be the beginning.”
Sam Fleischner, artistic director added, “I am excited about the films in our program that explores new techniques and predict future directions for the film medium by crushing perceptions about Artifice.”
Kathy del Beccaro, CEO added, “The films in this year’s program feel like real discoveries from all over the world, and I can’t wait for our audience to find something new in their dialogue.”
Rockaway Film Festival is a non -profit 501C3 that presents film and other programming all year round at Arverne Cinema, an outdoor space that expanded in 2024 to include a Scond, indoor theater.
