“Happyend” Neo sisterSophisticated Japanese drama about teens fighting for techno fascism in a not too-from-from-the-dystopian world, has found their own happy ending.
Metrogographic images were originally intended to release filma 2024 Venice premiere that Indieview raved aboutuntil the company paused the distribution business as Indiewire reported exclusively last week. Metrogography returned distribution rights back to “Happyend’s” original sales companies, enlargements, and now the film movement has taken up the film for release from September 12. Indiewire also debuts the exclusive trailer for the film below.
Here’s the Synopsis: “In a Near-Future Tokyo Where the Threat of a Catastrophic Earthquake Permades Daily Life, Two Rabble-Rousing Best Friends Are About to Graduate High School. One Night, They Pull A CONDSUM Installed in their school. Stuck Between The Oppressive Security System and a Darling National Political situation, The Two Respond In Contrasting Ways, Leading Them to Confront Differences They Never had to meet earlier.
In the lead role Kurihara Hayato, Hidaka Yukito, Ayumu Nakajima, Makiko Watanabe and Shirō Sano, “Happyend” premiered in the Orizzonti episode in Venice last year before playing festivals including London, Marrakech and New York. Film movement this year will also release another Asian title centered on surveillance, “Stranger Eyes” from SingaporeWhich also played Venice.
“Happyend” contains film by Bill Kirstein (who in a total rate also shot “Mean Girls” music structure from last year) and music by Lia Ouyang Rusli (composer behind this year’s A24 -Hit “Sorry, Baby”). Author/Director Sora is the son of late, great Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. He directed the documentary in 2023 about his father, “Opus” and “Happyend” is his first narrative function.
