Mariska Hargitay Has been on “Law & Order: SVU” since the beginning of 1999. It’s 26 seasons with a 27th on the road. It is still a grading winner in no small part due to Hargitay’s continued presence as Captain Olivia Benson, a role that has won her both an Emmy and a Golden Globe, among other awards. To make their latest documentary (and function director debut) “My mom Jayne,” that dropped on HBO MAX Last month, Hargitay channeled its inner “SVU” character Olivia Benson.
Hargitay’s Benson – which helps fictional victims count on their addicts every week – helped her prepare For the emotional process of making the documentary, which explores her relationship with mom … or rather the lack of it, then her mother Jayne Mansfield Died when Hargitay was only three years old.

And so from telling survivors to share their stories and … ask them to share and get through the other side, I think there is so much healing in that someone testifies to your story. You are immediately not alone anymore.”
Hargitay was bred by his father, Mickey Hargitay, but found out years later that he was not actually her biological father (who was actually Brazilian-Italian singer Nelson Sardelli). She tried to escape from her mother’s sexualized image, embarrassed by What Mariska thought was reductive. In the documentary, viewers look at Hargitay on a journey of discovery that allows her to see her mother in a more holistic light.
It was during the pandemic that Hargitay first began to feel really linked to her mother, she explained. She even started having birthday parties for her – although Mansfield died in 1967 in just 34 years old.
“(Making the documentary) was a cathartic experience. It’s something I have wanted, thought about for so long, but kind of afraid to deal with. Hargitay spent the pandemic forced “SVU” hiatus who sat thinking about Mansfield. “I had time to … literally open boxes. It was a time to go in,” she said.
