The beloved action cinema coming from Hong Kong in the 1980s and 90s is now honored by the distributor Scream! Studies.
Indieview announces exclusively that the films of John ‘Ringo Lam, TSUI HARK and Tony Ching will be shown as part of the series “Hong Kong Cinema Classics”, which takes place at Los Angeles’ American movie and New York City IFC Center In August 2025. The retrospective will then tour selected markets across the United States during the fall, with cry! Studies that release physical and digital versions, with the state of Golden Princess Library.
Woo will also participate in selected American film screenings. AUTEUR recently returned to Hollywood movie creation with 2023’s “Silent Night” and his 2024 remake by “The Killer” (Woo helped earlier original version from 1989also.) Woos ‘hard cooked,’ “Bullet in the head”, “A Better Tomorrow”, and its sequel, “A Better Tomorrow II”, are all among the program “Hong Kong Cinema Classics”. “A Better Tomorrow III”, directed by TSUI HARK, will also be shown, along with Hark’s “Beijing Opera Blues”, Ringo Lams “City on Fire”, Tony Chings “A Chinese Ghost Story” and more.
“Hong Kong Cinema Classics” is presented by Shout! Studies with support from GKIDS. The inauguration film The series debuts August 2 at American Cinematheque (Tickets here) and August 15 at IFC Center (Tickets here).
Scream! Studios also announced home entertainment release that honors Hong Kong-based films. The Jet LI collection will be released July 29 in 4K UHD and Blu-ray, along with the 4K releases of “City on Fire” on August 26 and “Beijing Opera Blues” on September 23. Shout! Studios collaborated with the Hong Kong file market to restore and remaster digitally these films, which were scanned in 4K from their original camera negative. Sub -texts have recently been translated from the original Cantonese, with the video and the sound also restored.
Scream! Studies recently acquired Gravitas Ventures earlier this year. The acquisition labeled cry! Studies that now own more than 3,300 properties over film and television from Gravitas Ventures. Gkids and Golden Princess Libraries were part of the partnerships that will continue throughout Gravitas Ventures business.
Further distribution collaborations include Aardman animations, “The Carol Burnett Show,” Studio GhibliLaika Studios, “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” and more. Gravitas Ventures will remain a separate brand within the cry! Studios Company.
