Well, Cat’s Out of the Proverbial Stage Props Bag – And overall it turned out to be an embarrassment for wealth for a surprisingly robust Broadway season, with escalating gross (Not to mention prices) reflects as much.
But as with everyone on stage drama, there are certainly some broken hearts at Tony Nomination Morning. Here is a look at some of the show and the artists that some were surprised not to see celebrated on the main strain for 2025.
“Othello”
Not only did the stars Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal not the average for their Shakespearean joy, but the massively successful revival was not rated for a single element. Could it be an answer to the hefty ticket prices? No worries, the two megawatts talents will be good as long as the audience, as Iago himself once said: “Put money in your purse.”
Idina Menzel in “Redwood”
Reviews were mixed at best, but many thought that Idina Menzel’s long-awaited Broadway return when a mourning climber would be greeted more warmly, if only for her tree-supported performance in the new musical. But the Tony Committee left her hanging.
Kieran Culkin in “Glengarry Glen Ross”
I guess An Oscar just has to be enoughWhen Culkin was transferred in the already competitive actor Play category for his less-showy co-star Bob Odenkirk. Surprisingly, given that Culkins Ricky Roma is usually the price of the award (Al Pacino, Liev Schreiber and Joe Mantegna have all been recognized for this part on stage and screen, with the two latter Tony winners for their efforts.)
“Cult of Love”
A stacked role including Zachary Quinto, Shailene Woodley and Mare Winningham, in combination with a fantastic production of Leslye Headland’s acidic family drama, was not enough to rate a single nomination for the second stage production. No love for “love”, truly.
Phylicia rashad as head of “purpose”
Almost the entire role of the fire Jacobs -jenkin’s headset “was nominated, as was the piece. But not the woman who directed it all? And by a twice Tony winner himself? It is a pity that there are so few black women who have ever been recognized as directors of Tony nominators, and this one is as worthy as everyone.
Sutton Foster in “Once Upon A Mattress”
Sure, it played far back in the fall of 2024, but it worked for some shows this year (“The Hills of California”, especially). And Foster is a Broadway legend and a damn nice Comedienne. But her princess Winnifred will have to sit this ball.
“The last five years”
Despite hot messages for star Adrienne Warren (with less hot for co-star Nick Jonas), and a not-a lot-crowned best revival of a musical category with only seven possible challengers and four places, said the Tony Committee “Goodbye until tomorrow” to quote one of the composer Jason Robrwn.
