And it’s a wrap. After an almost two -week frenzy of premieres, views, red rugs, parties and some extremely tired journalists (Aft, This year’s Toronto International Film Festival ends today. And as usual, the annual party ends both in style and with a fairly logical end point: a Sunday morning Awards ceremony.
This year’s ceremony will include the presentation of a number of awards, from the long -awaited People’s Choice Award to a couple of brand new awards, International People’s Choice Award and Best Animated Short Film.
But it is the People’s Choice Award that attracts the most attention, especially this early in the award season (read: really Early, but still seemingly in it). Twelve of the last 15 people’s Choice Award winners on TIFF Continued to get Oscar nominations for best image, and four of them (“King’s speech”, “12 years a slave”, “Green Book” and “Nomadland”) actually won the award. (Last year’s winner, “The Life of Chuck,” was not released until this year.)
All feature films and series in TIFF’s official choices are eligible for these prizes, which are (as the name implies) chosen by the audience itself. The four public prices include the People’s Choice Award, People’s Choice Documentary Award, People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award and the brand new International People’s Choice Award.
Today’s ceremony will also include presentation of various legal prices, including the platform priceThe Best Canadian Feature Film Award, Best Canadian Discovery Award, NetPac Award and the FPRIPERCI Prize, along with three short film awards (Best International Short Film, Best Canadian Short Film and New this year, Best Animated Short Film).
